Hand of the Week 16th December |
Show Detail |
Some very entertaining hands this week, with lots of slams. What about Board 15 with the 9-card spade suit? An easy 12 tricks with both finesses working if you have the nerve to take them but I wonder how one pair found their way into 7NT missing an ace. They were doubled for their pains! The next board (16) offered a solo 6NT (and a 6H) but with 32 points and two 5-card suits, it’s hard to see why more did not bid and make these slams. So I turn to Board 8 for an excellent solo 6 Diamonds. N/S have at least three obstacles to overcome here. Firstly, they have only 24 points between them so it’s all going to be about shape. Next, West is almost certainly going to open 3H, so their explorations must start at a high level. Finally, the stronger, South hand will be inhibited from using Blackwood; a one-ace response will not tell him if it’s the invaluable AD or the useless AH. Just one pair overcame these challenges, Danny and Richard. Well done! And there’s an extra award this week, to Robert and Jacqui who scored no less than three slams in the session. UPDATE! It's just been brought to my notice that 7H was made on Board 12. I must say, I can't see how and the computer agrees with me. There's nowhere to park both the spade losers, even on the spade lead, so I suspect a defensive faux pas. Nevertheless, I will have a replica of the gold cup made immediately and hand it to Brenda and Diana. Well done, ladies!

FREE ONLINE INFORMAL TEAMS |
Wednesday 18th December Now closed. Next teams on 8th January. Please watch this space for details of organiser.
Log in to BBO by 7:10pm and wait in the Lobby
Please do not wander off into other areas as you may become invisible to the organiser.
Please check and accept the invitation to play as soon as possible. Multiple invitations may be issued if someone does not accept in time.
Play will usually start around 7:15pm, but may be earlier if everyone is ready.
Explaining bids
If you do not understand an opponent's bid, or want further explanation, simply click on the bid. They will receive a pop-up box, where they can explain what their bid means. This is not visible to their partner, only to you and your partner (so no additional information is passed between them).
If you are asked to explain your bid, please do so promptly using the pop-up box, not in the table chat (as the chat can be seen by all players).
Online play with BBO uses Self-alerting
Before you bid, if your bid is not a natural bid, enter the meaning of your bid in the message box, and click the alert button.
This is not visible to your partner (who should already know what your bid means), only the opponents.
Using Undos
During bidding, if you genuinely mis-click a bid, you can immediately request an undo, which should normally be granted by your opponents.
Undos are not normally allowed during card play, so be careful when playing.
Chris has started an automated email notification service for updates to this section - the service runs from 7am to 10:55pm - if you would like to subscribe, please email Chris
(If you want to notify members of your own similar event here, please email David Barker)
