Nyarubaka School

The Nyarubaka School, Group Scolaire de Nyarubaka, is situated in an isolated part of Rwanda, approximately 10 miles from the main road in an extremely poor neighbourhood. Each year, due to government support, and the co-operation and funds from charities, it has been able to extend the number of pupils by what was originally 627 to an overwhelming 1900. The School was firstly a primary school and later developed into a secondary school in 2003, and in 2012 opened a nursery. The school has grown substantially during recent years due to a large demand from the local community.

The old school
The old school

The school originally provided only very basic requirements to meet the pupils' education needs and the children were housed in inadequate accommodation.

The new school

The new and re-developed school, whilst still not offering all facilities or equipment, at least now shelters the children and existing equipment.

The children, although continually facing huge challenges, are always happy, and were very excited after meeting the trustees of RITE.

On our visit during September 2012 we took four laptops to the school to contribute to the provision of basic IT skills. A growing school like this requires more IT equipment to properly meet the childrens' IT needs. The computer room's use is restricted by the lack of electricity as the equipment operates using a small generator at the school.
