Pittsburg - Longest Day Silent Auction a Big Success |
This is a follow up about Pittsburg’s local duplicate bridge club (PDBC) to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Association.
Every year the Alzheimer’s Association designates the longest day of the year to focus on Alzheimer’s.
For the past 10 years, American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) has raised $10M.
Funds from the game on June 21 and donations from players and others kicked off the Longest Day in Pittsburg.
That resulted in raising almost $1150 toward our 2024 goal of $1500.
This year, PDBC’s Director, Linda Harrison decided to ask some local merchants to give donations to help us raise more funds. Linda first went into Laura De Woody Jewelers. Laura DeWoody said she would be happy to donate a beautiful pair of purple ear rings and a purple stone bracelet. Laura suggested that Linda consider getting additional items and do a silent auction to raise funds. Linda loved the idea of a silent auction. Next she went to Mayben’s and they donated a beautiful bracelet and dressy black purse in memory of Margaret Jackson. Parker Drug donated a recycled wooden frame. Efurd’s Orchards donated a large basket shaped like Texas full of Efurd’s jellies and jams. Other players brought several interesting and unique items, including hand made pottery, some players who are artist donated paintings. The Silent Auction was a big success and ran for 3 weeks with players bidding on items and often outbidding others.
It was a wonderful day in Pittsburg on Friday, July 19th for a 6 table bridge game with lots of tough competition!
First, we had a little social gathering starting at 11:30AM along with the wrap-up of the Alzheimer’s Silent Auction.
The Silent Auction closed at 12N and the results far exceed my expectations!
We met our 2024 goal of $1500.! In fact, thanks to the Silent Auction, PDBC exceeded our Goal by $1,000 for a total donation of $2500 to Alzheimer’s Association!
This is PDBC’s 3rd year to participate in Alzheimer’s Longest Day; last year PDBC raised $1700.
A big Thank You to Laura DeWoody for suggesting a Silent Auction to raise additional funds! And, a big Thank You to the other local merchants and to everyone who participated in the Silent Auction!
This money will go for research in search of a cure for the devastating disease of Alzheimer’s. In addition, it supports patients, caregivers and health care professionals.

From Linda Harrison
On Friday, June 21, Pittsburg DBC had 5 tables for a Mitchell movement and lots of fun participating in the 2024 ACBL partnership with Alzheimer’s Association-The Longest Day!
I think our PDBC players are AMAZING!!! So far, they have raised $1150.00 toward our $1500.00 PDBC Goal for Alzheimer’s Assoc.
ALL Table fees from the June 21st game were also included in the donations. We are also planning a silent auction in July to raise the remainder of the funds.
ACBL has been partnering with Alzheimer’s Association for the past 10 years and raised $10M to help address Alzheimer’s Disease.

Jackie McElhaney Honored by American Legion Post 422 |
Jackie McElhaney retired after 43 years as a Flight Attendant. She served on military flights during the gulf war when American Airlines used their planes to transport military personnel to/from the war zone. She often carried a large American flag with her and had the military men and women sign the flag. She commented that it was difficult because she realized that some of these soldiers may be killed in combat and others may be wounded.
Upon retirement, Jackie and her husband, Joe moved from the Dallas area to Lake Cypress Springs near Mt. Vernon, Texas.
Jackie met a friendly 80+ neighbor, named Peaches, who was an avid bridge player. Peaches then introduced Jackie to her daughter, Dotsy Miller. Jackie and Dotsy soon became friends, too.
Jackie had never played bridge and Dotsy had only played some party bridge. They both became interested in playing duplicate bridge.
Sandy Lansing and Linda Harrison worked frequently with Dotsy and Jackie at informal “Learning Tables”. They also took some lessons from Heather Sanders. They were soon playing duplicate bridge at the ACBL sanctioned games in Pittsburg, TX, Soon, Jackie and Dotsy were ready to play in ACBL tournaments. They went to Athens, Richardson, Tyler and Longview and both became Life Masters April 2022! They continue to play weekly at the PITTSBURG DBC that meets at the American Legion Building.
It was a special event to have the American Legion Post 422 recognize Jackie at the October 27th meeting. Jackie had kept one of her flags and gave it to American Legion Post 422 Commander, Frank Harrison a few months ago. This flag has special meaning, so the Post had it framed and hung on the wall at the Legion. Post 422’s program Monday, October 23 given by Don Sides, Post Chaplin, focused on the History and Highlights of the American flag. District Commander Andy Lowe also gave a brief presentation about the history and importance of American Freedom and Liberty. The meeting concluded with the Post Commander, Frank Harrison, presenting Jackie with a plaque of appreciation.
