Pittsburg DBC Welcomes Alzheimer's Organization Rep |
On Tuesday, October 29th, Pittsburg DBC had a special guest from Arlington, TX, Laura Perez, Alzheimer's Organization Rep.
Laura presented a brief overview of Alzheimer's disease and how our participation is so important in supporting patient care, research, and caregiver support.
Pittsburg DBC has participated in Alzheimer’s Longest Day for the past three years. We raised $2500.00 for the Longest Day in June 2024.
Our club will be participating in the Winter Solstice, December 21, the darkest day of the year. The Winter Solstice "marks a turning point where each following day brings a little more light as we move toward the Longest Day and a future without Alzheimer and all other dementia.” Our players will receive luminaries.
They can write the names of family or friends who have Alzheimer or who have passed away. It was a fun day with 6 tables playing bridge and most players wearing purple to support Alzheimer’s fundraising programs!

Player Profile - Rand James |
Rand James: A Rising Star in Duplicate Bridge
Rand James made an impressive debut in the world of Duplicate Bridge, achieving a remarkable 77.50% game in her first year as a member of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). Her outstanding game took place at the Nacogdoches Duplicate Bridge Club, where Rand with all of 1.47 points partnered with the experienced Gay Roach with 4,750 points. Together, they formed a dynamic team that demonstrated both skill and synergy at the bridge table.
Before her retirement to Garrison, Texas, in 2010, Rand had a successful career as a real estate broker in the bustling Dallas area (incidentally, Gay is also a real estate broker). After decades of professional achievement, she returned to her roots, settling into the family home built by her father. Her connection to the town of Garrison was deep, and this move marked a return to simpler pleasures, one of which was her love for bridge.
Rand encountered the game of bridge during her freshman year at SFASU at the same that that she first, amusingly, smoked her first cig. A foursome of friends purchased a pack of Marlboros, which, she recalls, lasted them an entire week. This lighthearted memory connects two firsts in her life: the thrill of bridge and the fleeting experience of smoking. Although the cigarettes didn't last, her passion for bridge certainly did.
During her earlier years, Rand played bridge with a 3-table group of successful business women in Dallas then when she came to Nacogdoches she refined her skills in a more casual setting with the Newcomer’s Club before transitioning to the competitive world of Duplicate Bridge. Her natural aptitude for the game, paired with her calm demeanor and keen sense of humor has earned her admiration from fellow players at the Nacogdoches Duplicate Bridge Club.
Rand James’ 77.50% game is a testament to her talent, dedication, and quick adaptation to the competitive bridge scene. With such an extraordinary achievement in her first year, she has set a high bar for her future in the game, and the bridge community is eager to see more from this talented player.
