After two rounds of matches, it is easier to see where both teams stand. The A team had remained in the B division (middle of the 3 post COVID leagues) whilst the new B team had entered the C division

The A team lost their first match against Bishop Auckland BC 5 – 15 with both teams winning two sessions. Unfortunately, we only won ours by one or two IMPs. This didn’t seem a very promising start but we were able to field the same team for our first home match against Durham B. This was held in the conference room of the Windsor Hotel which proved a very suitable venue. Winning three of the four sets with two large swings meant that we are now second in the division following our 20 - 0 victory. (BABC are a couple of points higher in 1st)

Our target is again to finish in 3rd or 4th position so that we remain in this league so we are well placed to avoid relegation but at risk of promotion!

The B team have found the standard in their first two matches quite challenging, losing their first match to Stannington B by 20 – 0 and their second to Castle Morpeth A by 4 – 16. In their second match after three rounds they were only 1 IMP behind so have made some progress.

These are currently the top two teams in the division, so they shouldn’t be disappointed by their start. Hopefully we’ll see more progress as they compete with the other teams who have also suffered heavy defeats. Those playing will get used to playing 32 boards, maintaining their concentration after the tea interval. The key issue is that the team are enjoying their experience and that, so far, there have been no problems raising a team.
