Warwickshire Juniors visit House of Lords |
Three of Warwickshire’s Junior Members, and Eight Minibridge students from Bentley Heath School, accompanied by four members of staff, took part in a Bridge Challenge against a team from the House of Lords.
The group was welcomed to the House of Lords by Baroness Henig, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Bridge Group, together with members of the English Bridge Union, headed by Heather Dhondy, Women’s England International.
Following a tour of the House of Lords they were joined by other Peers and the Challenge commenced. Three tables played Minibridge and two tables played Bridge. The adults played a mixture of Bridge and Minibridge, allowing them to play against most of the students, some Peers having the pleasure of playing Minibridge for the first time, and there were some interesting results from both sections!
In the Minibridge section the students prevailed, with Harriet and Katie leading the field. In the Bridge section, the three separate matches were much closer, again with some unexpected results, including a lucky +1700 on the one hand for the Lords’ team, which gave them a slender overall win.
The English Bridge Union presented the students, Warwickshire, and Bentley Heath School, with beautifully engraved crystal plaques, and the day ended with refreshments in the House of Lords Terrace Restaurant.
Our thanks go to everyone who contributed to the success of the day, including the staff, the parents and the volunteers, who have all played their part in introducing the students to Bridge and Minibridge. Thanks also go to Baroness Henig and the English Bridge Union for this unique opportunity.
Finally, our congratulations to all of the students, who were the real stars of the day, especially on such a hot and sunny day, with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius!
Prior to the visit BBC Coventry and Warwickshire visited Bentley Heath to play a hand of minibridge, and also talked to the Chairman of the APPG, Bob Blackman MP. BBC Coventry & Warwickshire - scroll to 1:26:00 and 2:23:00
