The EBU operates a National Grading Scheme which runs in tandem with the Master Points system. The NGS scheme now covers the last 2000 boards you have played resulting in a current assessment of your standard of play. The scheme is accessed from the EBU website under NGS & then clicking Nottinghamshire.

Our annual Charity Event, which takes place on Sunday 4th August 2024 @ 2.00pm,

will be in the format of a Duplicate Pairs Competition for the Joyce Irving Charity Rose Bowl

We would like to see as many players as possible for this event, which will be held at the Hallcroft Community Centre, Retford.

The Club will pay all costs, so no match fees will be charged. Refreshments will be provided and we will organise a raffle.

All proceeds will be donated to the Bassetlaw Hospice.

Players will be asked to give a donation to the Hospice – a minimum of  £5 per person is a guideline. Wherever possible we ask that members pay directly to the Hospice: -

A/c name: Bassetlaw Hospice of the Good Shepherd Charity no 701876

A/c Number : 42203668

Sort Code: 30-67-76

Please use as reference RBC and your surname so enabling us to see the total donated by RBC members.

In addition, monies will be collected at the event from players who do not wish to pay by bank transfer.

Seasonal Greetings

The committee of Retford Bridge Club would like to wish all club members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year, and to thank everybody for your support during the past year.

We would also like to remind members that the Club Annual General Meeting will take place on Friday 5th January 2024 from 13:30 to 18:30 at Hallcroft. The event will begin with the AGM with refreshments. That will be followed by an informal session of face-to-face Bridge, with an afternoon tea included. It is hoped that as many members as possible will come to Hallcroft both for the meeting and for the bridge.

For more details, contact the club secretary (secrbridgec@gmail.com).

Joyce Irving Rose Bowl Trophy

16 pairs competed for the Trophy on Sunday 23 April. The event was won by Sandy Fulton and John Rolph. Full results are on the Results Page. Over £430 was raised for the Bassetlaw Hospice through donations and a raffle, and players enjoyed an excellent spread of cakes and buns generously provided by some of the members. The occasion also provided an opportunity to take some photos of 2022 competition winners and to acknowledge Sandy Fulton's outstanding contribution to the club over the past 25 years. Details are on the News Page.

Wednesday Afternoon Bridge at Hallcroft

The afternoon session of bridge continues now at Hallcroft. This will be more of a social occasion rather than the more competitive evening sessions. It will hopefully attract those members who dislike travelling at night in the dark as well as those who prefer a more relaxed game. It will also act as a stepping stone for those who are learning, to practice and improve their skills. Start time is 2pm and there will be a coffee/tea break halfway through the afternoon with an expected finish time of 4 to 430. It is open to members and non-members alike.

These will continue throughout the winter months and the fee will remain at £2 per session, BUT, only if you become a club member. This will enable you to play in the twice weekly duplicate sessions at Hallcroft as well as the Wednesday sessions. You can however still play as a visitor but the fee will now be £3. The fee for joining the club is £20 and application forms are at the Hallcroft Community Centre. Experienced club players will offer advice on the intricacies of the game.

Numbers for these sessions have been improving recently and have been very popular for those non members and members who have attended. So if you are free on a Wednesday afternoon and have nothing planned or if bad weather stops your afternoon plans then come along and enjoy some friendly bridge. NO PARTNER REQUIRED as a club or committee member will be present to act as host.

Please note that these sessions are now held at the club base in Hallcroft Community Centre on Randall Way from Wednesday 5th February.

JOURNAL CUP SUCCESS

Congratulations to the three Retford pairs who played in the Journal Cup this Sunday. This is the annual Notts Pairs competition and Retford secured a clean sweep of 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Winners were Steve Mulligan and Martin Button with 66.41%, usurping last year's winners John Rolph and Sandy Fulton who scored 62.89%. Julia Staniforth ande Roger Stock completed the clean sweep with 56.64%. Congratulations to all three pairs.

Open Evenings

AThe Open Evening on the 30th July will be the last one due to the poor response to attract new members. Instead new potential members, students of Mike and Sandy and those who prefer a more relaxed game of bridge are encouraged to attend the weekly social bridge on Wednesdays at 150pm at Hallcroft Community Centre, DN22 7GR. This is open to new players and all club members can also attend. A club or committee member will be present so you can come and get a game even if you don’t have a partner.
