Hammond Trophy Hammond Trophy

The competition for the Hammond Trophy was held on Thursday 19 September.  This trophy was presented to County Bridge Club by Ron and Noel Hammond, two brothers, who regularly played bridge in local clubs. Twelve couples took part and the results at the top were very close. The worthy winners were Jim Skipper and Ian Neilson with 61.67%, with Dave Starkie and Vicki Walsh scoring 59.58% in second position, followed by Corinne Cragg and Cliff Mawdsley, with 58.75% in third place. Dave Starkie was the TD and rhe results were checked by Stuart Eastwood.

Haworth Rose Bowl Haworth Rose Bowl

The competition for the Haworth Rose Bowl was played on 9 July 2024.  It was won by Gerry Green and Pat Yates, with a score of 63.13% and the runners up were Vicki Walsh and Kathleen Wildman with a score of 60.63%. Kathleen Wildman was the TD and eleven pairs took part

Vivian Whyde Trophy Vivian Whyde Trophy

Vivian Whyde was a member of Penwortham Bridge Club and was one of the founder members of what became Headquarters Social Bridge Club. Following her death, her daughter, Lesley donated this trophy.

Ten pairs competed on Thursday, 18 May 2024 and the winners with a magnificent score of 66% were Jane Underwood and Pat Yates, while the runners-up were Stuart Eastwood and Val Snape with a score of 55%.

Whittaker Trophy Whittaker Trophy

The competition for the Whittaker Trophy was held on 5 February 2024 and was won by Corinne Cragg and Sheila Groves with a score of 61.67%.  The runners up were Stuart Eastwood and Dave Johnston with a score of 60.83% and the players in third place were Vicki Walsh and Kathleen Wildman, scoring 60.42%. Twelve couples took part.

Nan Whittaker had been a keen bridge player as well as a very competent golfer and was well known in the area. Sheila was particularly pleased to win this trophy because she remembers playing bridge and golf with her.

Carefoot Rose Bowl Carefoot Rose Bowl

The competition for the Carefoot Rose Bowl was held on Thursday 21 September.  This trophy was presented to County Hall Bridge Club by Lilian Carefoot, who many members remember, in memory of her husband, David. The winners were Corinne Cragg and Keith Garsden with a score of 56.72% and the runners up were Mike Bridges and Val Snape with a score of 55.78%.

June Dobson Rose Bowl June Dobson Rose Bowl

The competition for the June Dobson Rose Bowl was held on Monday 10 July, 2023 and the  winners were Anthony and Marion Chappell with a score of 61.67% whilst in second place were Vicki Walsh and Kathleen Wildman with a score of 59.83%.  Altogether twelve pairs took part in the competition.

June Dobson had been a regular player in Penwortham and after her death, her husband Alan presented the Rose Bowl to the club in her memory. Alan continued to play bridge until his death in recent years and he is remembered fondly by present members.

Forde Trophy Forde Trophy

The competition for the Forde Trophy was held on Thursday 20 April 2023.  This trophy was originally called The Spring Trophy and was the only one competed for, at the Thursday evening session of Penwortham Bridge Club.  After the untimely deaths of two of the club's stalwarts, Brendan and Sharon Forde, it was proposed that we renamed this trophy in their honour.  For many years, Brendan was the the Chairman and Sharon  the Treasurer, but their activities within the club ranged far wider. 10 pairs competed and the results were extremely close at the top.  Dave Starkie and Vicki Walsh were the worthy winners with a score of 59.5%, closely followed by Corinne Cragg and Sheila Groves in second position with 59.0%.  Dave was the TD and Corinne scored the event, but the results were independently checked by Kathleen Wildman.

Broughton Cup Broughton Cup

We held the first competition since the Covid lockdown on Monday 6 February 2023. It was for the Broughton Cup, which was originally presented to HQ Bridge Club by John Broughton, one of the founder members, who was also a long standing member of Penwortham Bridge Club.  Corinne Cragg was the TD and scorer, with Marion Chappell checking the scoring.  The worthy winners with a score of 59.52% were Dave Johnston and Stuart Eastwood, while the runners up with a score of 57.62% were Steve Madill and Jack Higham.  There were 7.5 tables.

The Amy Whiteside Cup 2018 The Amy Whiteside Cup 2018

The competition for the Amy Whiteside Cup was held on 18 November 2019 and was won by  Roy Holdsworth and Liz Hull, with a score of 61.61%. The runners up were Vicki Walsh and Stuart Eastwood, with a score of 61.01% and in third place, for the second year running were Jane Underwood and Sue Nutting with 58.93%. Sixteen pairs took part and Corinne Cragg was the TD.
