Dear Members

In an effort to promote the Club, and make it more attractive to both existing and new players, the Committee have agreed to proceed with the purchase of the HandyDup machine. This will enable Boards to be pre dealt, with an analysis of cards, contracts and results following play.

An email was sent to everyone, to explain the rationale and costs etc, which seemed to be very well received.

There have been a few teething issues on the technology side, but it is hoped that the HandyDup will be operational by early in 2025.

The Club was proud to hold both their 35th Anniversary Event together with the Mary Armitage Cup 2024 on 16th October.

The chocolate cake baked by Marilyn went down well with a drink !

And the worthy winning random pair partnership for 2024 were Pauline Parker and Dennis Thompson, with an enviable 71.88% !

Congratulations, and very well done Pauline and Roger. 

The next event to look forward to is the "Xmas Fuddle" on 11th December, so make a note in your diaries

Ossett Bridge Club held it's Xmas "Fuddle" on 11th December. There were fun games of Bridge, including one where the opener had to bid 1NT regardless of the cards held, and another where the final contract had to be decided by a throw of the dice ! Huge fun !! 

There was also a super buffet, a veritable feast, with contributions from members, together with a cup of good cheer !

The raffle raised £85 for club funds, which is amazing, so many thanks to those who donated prizes and/or bought tickets.

Another highlight of the evening was discovering that Dennis was the winner of the Ossett Community Centre raffle. (The Club President was seen touching his sleeve, in case the luck would rub off !!) 

All in all, it was a highly successful evening, which has hopefully set the scene for further Xmas merriment !

There will be Bridge on 18th December, after which we stop for the holidays, and then re open in the New Year on Wednesday 8th January.

The Mayor of Wakefield, Darren Byford, visited the Ossett Bridge Club stall at the Silver Sunday Event held at The Ridings Shopping Centre on 6th October.

The event is organised by Age UK, with a view to advising and informing senior citizens of opportunities and assistance available, specific to their demographic.

The Mayor apparently learnt Bridge at school, but pressure of work may prevent him joining our Club ! 

The stall was manned by Val, Marilyn, Maria and Roger, who encouraged anyone interested to "Give it a Go" But it also raises the profile of the Club, so fingers crossed we get some interest.

We are pleased to announce that on the 16th October, the Club will be both celebrating our 35th Anniversary, and also playing for the Mary Armitage Cup.

There will be cake to celebrate the momentous occasion of 35 years of happy Bridge playing  . Mary Armitage was, of course, a long time member, in whose honour the Cup is named, so it is doubly apt that these events are combined.

Please feel free to bring a drink of your own choice to raise a glass to toast the Club, and wish it many more years to come ! (Glasses will be provided). 

Just a reminder that when playing for the Mary Armitage Cup, it is very basic ACOL, Weak No trumps, Stayman and Blackwood, and with a partner picked at random. So even more fun than usual !!

We hope to see as many people as possible on 16th October, and are also hoping to get an article in the Wakefield Express following on from it, to promote the Club.

The Ossett Summer Tea Party was held on 6th July.

There was a glass of fizz, a delicious cream tea, and a few hands of Bridge for good measure !

Many thanks to all who came and made it such a success, we hope you had an enjoyable afternoon, which raised over £140.00 for the Club ! 

And Congratulations to the winners, Dennis and John.

The next event at Ossett will be a joint one, for the Mary Armitage Cup, and the 35th Anniversary of Ossett Bridge Club. Those events will be held on 16th October, so please keep that date free in your diary.

Ossett Bridge Club are pleased to announce that the next Club Event is now confirmed for 6th July.

This is the Summer Tea Party, which will run from 2pm until 6pm, at the bargain price of £12.50 per person.

In addition to a welcome drink, there will be Bridge play, followed by a delicious cream tea of scones, butter, jam, cream and strawberries, washed down with a cup of tea (other beverages will be available).Then more Bridge, with prizes for the winners !

As ever, there will be a raffle, so if anyone has a prize to donate, please can you pass it to a committee member (Marilyn, Val, John or Maria), preferably in advance of the 6 July date.

We will be running a partner finder, so if you know of anyone who would like to attend but does not have a partner, please speak to Marilyn.

And remember to book early, as places are limited !

The Ossett Bridge Club A.G.M was held on Wednesday 17th April, when Cups were presented to the winners of:

• The Jubilee Cup - won by Veronica Hartley and Adrian Dubel
• The Kettlewell Cup - Handicap - won by Adrian Dubel
• Rimmer Trophy - Best Improver - won by Veronica Hartley
• Ossett Trophy - Player of the Year - won by Dennis Thompson
• Forrester Cup - Runner Up - won by Nigel Walker

Many congratulations to all the winners, and don't forget, there is still the Mary Armitage Cup to play for on October 16th !

Ossett Bridge Club held a St Valentines Day Event on their Club Night on 14th February.

There were buns, wine, decorations and a raffle (which raised an amazing £70.50)

Ladies wore red/heart themed outfits, which added to the fun !

The annual Mary Armitage Cup was played on Wednesday 18th October 

Many congratulations to the winning partnership of Deborah Poppleton and Adrian Dubel, with a score of 68.75%

The Halloween themed evening was a "spooktacular" success, with decorations, cakes and a raffle. Deborah was virtually unrecognisable in her costume, and if there had been a prize for best outfit, she would definitely have won it ! 

The Xmas Fuddle is now eagerly awaited !

Saturday 8th July saw yet another full house for Cynthia Speeden's Bridge Afternoon, as the latest of the popular events which have been held by Cynthia over many years.

Over £200 was raised for the club funds, for which Ossett Bridge Club is extremely grateful, as that helps the club to continue and prosper.

Thanks go to Cynthia, and also to Molly, Jenny and Bill Davis, who have all played a large part in running the events including setting up, TD'ing, and drawing the raffle ! And also to Chris Maynard for dealing the cards and scoring.

The buffet lunch was delicious, as always !

Congratulations go to Trevor and Sue Thick as North/South winners, and to Shirley Bastow and Margaret Fox as East /West winners.

There was a good turn out for the "Red White and Blue" themed Coronation party on 3 May 2023.
