Killyleagh Bridge Club held a memorial night on Monday 27 March 2017 for Norma, the club secretary, who died suddenly during cancer treatment. The event was fully subscribed reflecting the high esteem in which Norma was held both in her local club and the wider bridge community. As though to emphasise how much Norma (our technical guru) is missed computer problems meant that the competition results were not available on the night as had been intended but the position was rescued by the hard work of our tournament directors who manually processed the scores and these are now included on our website. Our congratulations go to the winners of each section. Small mementos of the night will be distributed to them in due course. The main purpose of the night was of course to have an enjoyable night’s bridge and raise funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre the charity selected by Norma’s family and we are pleased to announce that the net amount raised for the charity currently stands at £1,550.00 Our thanks go to all those who so generously assisted and supported this very enjoyable event.
Update
As a result of the success of the event we were able to donate £1,600 to the Friends of the Cancer Centre. This was done over the Easter break and Bill Percival-Price along with a few club members can be seen on the charity’s website presenting the cheque. The link to this is
https://www.friendsofthecancercentre.com/gallery/killyleagh-bridge-club
The winners of the event were all from the Killyleagh Bridge Club and the Section A winners North South & East West (who presumably were less camera shy than the Section B winners) can be seen above receiving their prizes from the club chairman Mary Brown

Gala Pairs for Inter A. B and Novices |
![Gala Pairs for Inter A. B and Novices](/killyleagh/Gala_pairs_1.jpg) NIBU have introduced a new competition for us. The Gala Pairs at La Mon on Sunday 4th August. This was a great opportunity to play with others of equal standard.
There were three sections: Intermediate A, Intermediate B and Novice (for those playing 3 years or less).
It was an easy going, enjoyable and fun day and a great introduction to playing in an event with others from outside the club.
Hot news Geoff Booth & Lorna Thompson came second in one of the Novice pairs sessions.... Congratulations! Our club had 24 players entered.

Killyleagh Bridge Club goes travelling |
![Killyleagh Bridge Club goes travelling](/killyleagh/Killyleagh_Bridge_Club_visits_European_Championships.jpg) |
One club night in May Gerry enthused about the European Bridge Championships to be held in Dublin during June. 11 members took the train one Thursday morning (which allowed lots of hands to be dealt and tactics discussed for September when we resume club nights). The organisation of the Championship event was massive and it was a great experience seeing how it was run. Through a large window upstairs in the hotel we could see a huge wall of pre-dealt boards for the competitors to play. We were warmly greeted by the welcoming party especially Gerry who had been President of the event when it was last held in Killarney. We sat in the commentary room where the hands were displayed on theVugraph. 4 experts commented on the bidding and play. Of course not always agreeing with each other! Click here for a video of a session. Click here to see the Vuegraph room During the lunch break we observed intense discussion between team members and the very different dress codes and appearance of the players. Some were very casual and others formal, some had long shaggy hair, some were mature and others quite young, some had paunches, others were skinny. ( A bit like our own club then...)
All in all it was a grand day out!
