The annual Christmas Party was held by Horning Bridge Club on Monday 11th December 2017.  Chief tournament director Robert Harber greeted arriving members with a festive drink, which they enjoyed whilst awaiting start of play.  A mid-session interval was taken where all sampled a fantastic selection of savouries and sweets that members had provided for the occasion.

A fun bridge pivot movement was played and at the end of play scores were totted up resulting in individual North, South, East and West winners and consolation prizes. Prizes were presented by Chairman Ron Hunt.

Consolation prizes were awarded to members who hadn't fared so well!

The newly elected Committee now comprises: Ron Hunt (Chairman), Laurie Platt (Vice Chairman), Peter Bowman (Treasurer), Glenny McAndie (Secretary), Cynthia Dennes (Catering), Jenny Hemmings (Partner Finder and Daytime Bridge Co-Ordinator) and general Committee members Jenny Pearce, Peter Clarke and Jim Fletcher.

The Club welcomes all newly elected and re-elected Committee members.

The Chairman also thanked and congratulated Jim Fletcher for participating in the Tournament Directors' Course, in which he was successful. Jim is a welcome addition to the Director's rota.

BRIDGE DAY AT STOWER GRANGE 16th JANUARY 2017
  • EW Unfortunates Margaret de Feyter Bunty Munday
  • EW Winners David and Shirley Willits
  • NS Unfortunates Cynthia Dennes Jacqui Wheatley
  • NS Winners David Smith Ronnie Hill

Following last years' extremely succesful bridge away-day at the Stower Grange Hotel, Drayton, the same venue was chosen by the Committee for the 2017 event.

On arrival at 09:45 am members enjoyed tea or coffee whilst settling in to the bridge tables awaiting start of play.  Chairman Ron Hunt outlined the approximate timetable for the day and bridge commenced at 10:30 am.  Normal duplicate bridge was played, but having separate N-S and E-W winners to allow for separate winners on the day.

Bridge was adjourned at 12:30 pm for members to gather in the bar and enjoy a lunchtime drink prior to settling down for a delicious two-course lunch provided by the Hotel.

Bridge re-commenced at 2:15 pm until time for tea and coffee refreshments at approximately 4:00 pm.  A raffle was then held in aid of Help for Heroes - the charity this year being chosen by Jenny Pearce.  A magnificient collection in excess of £190.00 was raised for this well-deserving charity.  Help for Heroes was founded in 2007 to provide direct, practical support for wounded, injured and sick veterans, servicemen and women and their loved ones.

Finally, the bridge prize winners were announced and Chairman Ron Hunt presented the prizes to the winners and "not-so-fortunate" players:

NORTH-SOUTH WINNERS: David Smith & Ronnie Hill

NORTH-SOUTH UNFORTUNATES: Cynthia Dennes & Jacqui Wheatley

EAST-WEST WINNERS: David & Shirley Willits

EAST-WEST UNFORTUNATES: Margaret de Feyter & Bunty Munday

An inspired decision by Horning Bridge Club Committee selected the Wroxham Yacht Club as an additional Bridge Away Day to be held on Monday 26th June 2017.  This proved to be a wonderful choice of venue for a summer bridge away day, helped by gorgeous sunny weather offering beautiful views across Wroxham Broad.

The event was extremely well-attended by 56 players and some additonal spouses/partners attended during the buffet luncheon to swell the total even further.

On arrival at 09:30 am players enjoyed tea or coffee whilst settling in to the bridge tables awaiting start of play.  Chairman Ron Hunt outlined the approximate timetable for the day and bridge commenced at 10:15 am.  Normal duplicate bridge was played, but having separate N-S and E-W winners rather than the usual arrow-switched single winner movement.

Bridge was adjourned at 12:30 pm for members to gather in the bar and enjoy a lunchtime drink prior to enjoying a superb buffet luncheon provided by the Wroxham Yacht Club.

Bridge re-commenced at 2:15 pm, finishing at approximately 4:00 pm, and tea and coffee refreshments followed.  The N-S and E-W winners were announced and presented with a nice bottle of wine by Chairman Ron Hunt.

N - S Winners : Jill Abbott & Hazel Carney

E - W Winners : Margaret de Feyter & Brenda Wooding

A great day out seemed to be well enjoyed by all - emphasised by a large majority requesting the event to be repeated next year!
