Once again we had a wonderful turn-out of members for our annual Christmas Party, resulting in 16 tables in play. On arrival members were greeted with a drink by chief tournament director Robert Harber and selected a seat at the bridge tables awaiting start of play.  For the mid-session interval, members had provided a fabulous spread of savouries and sweets which everyone enjoyed to the full (literally!).

Prior to commencement of play, the winners of the Horning Bridge Club heat in the annual ECATS Children-in-Need Simultaneous Pairs event (held in November) were presented with their winners certificates by President Suzanne Gill.  Well done to Matt and Keith!

A fun bridge pivot movement was played resulting in individual North, South, East and West winners and runners up.  At the end of play scores were totted up and prizes presented by President Suzanne Gill.

NORTH WINNER: Brenda Wooding (3,460) NORTH RUNNER UP: Laurie Platt (2,130)

SOUTH WINNER: Pat Whittle (1,900) SOUTH RUNNER UP: Doreen Hamilton (1,700)

EAST WINNER: Margaret Lanham (1,500) EAST RUNNER UP: Jane Brown (1,300)

WEST WINNER: Margaret Whipp (2,050) WEST RUNNER UP: Vic Ellis (1,650)

THE 46th NORFOLK CONGRESS 2014

Congratulations to the following Horning BC Members who entered various events at this years' Congress and helped to make it an extrememly successful weekend:

 

Suzanne Gill, Gary Putman, Kate Pledger, Steve Beckley, Martin Oates, Reg Ovenden, Robert Harber, Pat Whittle, Peter Bowman and David Smith.

 

A special mention and congratulations to the following, who did extremely well in their event:

 

Suzanne Gill and her partner (Trish Raywood) won the Markwell Trophy (the 'C' Final of Norfolk Championship Pairs)

Gary Putman and his partner (Hazel Keith) won the Open Pairs

Martin Oates, together with his team mates (Sarah Watson, Paul Archer & Jeff Smith) won the Neville Hill Cup (Swiss Teams)

Robert Harber, Pat Whittle, Peter Bowman & David Smith won the President's Cup for being the best placed "Non-Expert" team in the Neville Hill Cup (Swiss Teams)

 

Also, another special mention to Kate Pledger & Steve Beckley, who courageously entered the Congress, having only just learnt to play bridge within the last year - well done to them!

Our annual away-day was once again held at the Holiday Inn, Norwich and, as usual, proved to be an excellent day.  The Holiday Inn staff looked after us all really well and the well-stocked carvery luncheon was enjoyed by all.

On arrival at 10:00 am members were greeted with tea and coffee refreshments whilst settling down at the bridge tables.  Chairperson Cathy Smith outlined an approximate timetable for the day's programme.

A bridge pivot movement was commenced at 10:30 am and continued until 12:30 pm, when we adjourned for lunch.

Following lunch, a raffle was held with the proceeds being donated to the Targeted Radiotherapy Appeal.  A magnificent £310.00 was raised and the money will be go towards building dedicated facilities at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital which will alleviate the need for patients to travel to either London or Cambridge.

Bridge continued after the raffle until mid-afternoon, when further tea and coffee refreshments were provided and the winners prizes were presented by Chairperson Cathy Smith.

EAST WINNER: Pam Lockwood (2350) WEST WINNER: Suzanne Gill (1760)

Consolation prizes were also awarded to the unluckiest North (Cynthia Deness), South (Jenny Pearce), East (Gordon Wishart) and West (Wendy Lewis) players!
