  Burton-Pryor Cup
Burton-Pryor Cup

Donated by Steve Burton and Karen & Malcolm Pryor, who were the first winners.

Awarded to the winners of the knock-out teams competition, introduced in January 2007.

The format of the competition was changed in 2022 to reduce the number of rounds

The rules are:
  1. Teams must be made up from Farnborough Members.
  2. There is a qualifying round on the second Wednesday of April to reduce the number of teams to 4. The format of this round is Multiple Teams. If there is a tie for the last qualifying place then this is split using the following methods (and in this order should there continue to be a tie): Net IMPs in boards played between the tied teams; most 'wins' in head to head matches over the whole evening; Captains draw from a pack of cards - Aces are high and suits rank in order of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. The highest ranking card wins.
  3. The format of the remaining rounds is knock-out with seeding according to qualifying positions. That is, semi finals of 1 v 4; 2 v 3.
  4. Subsequent rounds will be played on the second Wednesday of the month, and will be advertised as such on the calendar: semi final in May and final in June.
  5. Matches of 24 boards must be played at the club on the appointed night.  If a team cannot find 4 eligible players to turn out on the appointed night then they shall forfeit the match.
  6. Throughout the competition, each team will be allowed a maximum of two substitutes. No more than 6 people may represent any one team. A member who has already played in one team (including the qualifying round) is then not allowed to represent a different team later in the competition.

  Friday Ladder (*NEW*)
Friday Ladder (*NEW*)

NEW - FRIDAY LADDER

Aims

This pairs competition is designed to allow players to have an opportunity to play in a field that is more balanced towards their ability. There will be two trophies one for the ladder winners and one for the pair that has performed the best relative to their NGS.

Format

There will be two divisions. The 1st division will have 10 pairs, and all subsequent pairs are in 2nd division. The top 2 pairs from division 2 will be promoted and bottom 2 pairs in the 1st division will be relegated each month.

There are 10 rounds from October to July. Your top 8 scores are taken, but please see substitute rules below.

Points will be awarded for both position and additionally for scores over 60%.

Substitutes

Substitutes are allowed.

There is no penalty for a substitute, but only 2 substitute results will count within the final 8 scores. Therefore, the first 6 scores must come from the partnership, the other two scores are the best from the remaining 4.

Points

1st Division – 20 for 1st then down by 2 points per position, to 2 for last.

2nd Division – 18 for 1st then down by 2 points per position. The points may be spread further if fewer than 5 tables. If more than 10 pairs then 11th downwards will receive no points.

Additional points will be awarded as follows:

60%- 64.99% - 1 point

65% - 69.99% - 2 points

70% - 74.99% - 3 points

75% - 79.99% - 4 points

80% + - 5 points

Only the top 8 scores count. So, if a pair play 10 rounds their lowest 2 scores are taken off.

NGS – The top 10 NGS scoring pairs from on the ladder night will receive points. 10 points for 1st down by 1 per place with 10th getting 1 point.  Only the best 8 scores count.

  Hampton Shield

Donated in recognition of the efforts of Mike Hampton in ensuring that the club was able to continue during the lockdowns of 2020-22.  Mike was a longstanding Match Captain for the Club, and when the government introduced lockdown and quarantine controls he ensured that the Club was able to transition effectively to an on-line environment.  He established the processes and policies necessary for this to happen and enabled members to continue playing bridge in very troubled times.

The Shield is awarded to the member achieving the highest aggregate score in matchpoint pairs events over the year, once results have been adjusted for handicaps.

Handicaps are calculated on the performance of each player in a pair over the prior 12 months in Club matchpoint pairs events.  The average of the pair's handicaps is then applied to the result on the night.  Non-members are allowed to participate. Anyone (member or non-member) who has played fewer than three times over the prior 12 months will have a large handicap applied to their result.

Once handicaps have been applied, the leading six pairs are awarded points - 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1.  The winner of the shield is the member who has the highest aggregate number of points over the year.
