ALAN SMITH - SAD NEWS |
We are very sorry to hear that Alan Smith passed away on Wednesday evening (25 January), following a long illness.
Alan was a founder member of East Midland Bridge Club. He was also President of the DCBA. Alan and his wife Pat were regular players at the club until her death. But Alan continued to play bridge until his health prevented this. Alan was always friendly and was a popular bridge player. Deepest sympathy is extended to his family, bridge partners and the wider bridge community.
Alan's funeral is at 11 am on Thursday 2 March at Markeaton Crematorium. All friends and bridge players are welcome. Donations in Alan's memory can be made to the Nightingale MacMillan Unit. The wake afterwards will be held at the Red Cow at Allestree.

EMBC ONLINE Bridge |
East Midlands Bridge Club will be holding their 1st online bridge session using the Bridge Base Online (BBO) website at 6.30 pm on June 1st 2020, thereafter at 6.30 pm every Monday evening.
You may have already received an email on this topic. But if you haven't received an email and you are interested in playing in most (or even some) of our proposed EMBC events, please email Liz Hall on lizhall202@btinternet.com. The club welcome your feedback so if you have any comments or suggestions about EMBC on line events, please contact Liz Hall
To aid the smooth running of each online event, it will be run by an EBU TD.
To play you will need a BBO user account. Each session will initially be priced at 3 BB$. This amount will only increase if events are running at a loss. BB$ are available once you are logged on to the BBO website.
Some useful information about getting started on BBO:-
How to get your own username: Getting a BBO Username.
How to become familar with BBO site, see here: Familiarise yourself with BBO.
How to join a game with a partner: Join a game with someone you know.
How to set up your own table for use by you and three friends: create your own table on BBO.
Compare your results with others playing the same cards: Compare your results with others.
On BBO you self-alert all bids or announcements. Here's how: Self-Alerting on BBO

Entering the EMBC event (n.b. this is EBU Level 2)
Registration opens 2 hours before the start time (i.e. 4.30 pm).
Both members of a partnership need to be online simultaneously in order to register, so agree with your partner the best time to register in the event. Then you can log off and return 5 – 10 minutes before start time. Do not enter the "Casual" domain at this time as you will not be visible and may miss the start of the event which is in the "Competitve" domain.
For your first EMBC game, please register as early as possible so that any issues (e.g. item 8 below) can be resolved before the event starts.
How to register for a club game:
- Log on to BBO
- Make sure you have sufficient BBO$ in your account to cover this event
- Click Competitive (under Play or Watch Bridge)
- Click All Tournaments
- In the Search Box (above where it says “Entries”) type EMBC or EAST
- Click on the event in the list
- Either enter the BBO name of your partner.
- Or, if you have no partner, there is a partnership desk where you can add yourself if you are looking for a partner. The partnership desk does not do anything automatically. If there are other people on the partnership desk you need to invite one of them to play with you and register in the normal way.
- Or you can play with a Robot. This costs an extra BB$0.25.
- Click invite. Your partner will also need to be logged on to BBO in order for them to receive your invite. At this point you will be charged the event fee.
- If you receive a message “This tournament is private - only select usernames are allowed to participate” then you need to contact Jim (or Sue) to be correctly added to our BBO events members list. Therefore it is best to register as early as you can for your first EMBC event.

Don Smedley - Sad News |
We are very sorry to hear that Don Smedley has passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. He was 86.
Don was the TD and Host at East Midlands Bridge Club for many, many years; he was an excellent bridge player, a very gentle man and a special person.
June (Don's widow) has asked that donations in Don's memory be made to the Alzheimer's Society (click here to donate).
There is a fuller obituary on the DCBA website, detailing Don's many achievements in the bridge (and chess) world. But for us at East Midlands he was just a lovely man who will be much missed.

BRIDGE FOR BEGINNERS |
Bridge classes will start again this month (September).
Obviously with the Covid virus and social distancing, these cannot be held face-to-face at Spondon. But they can take place online!
Being online means that the classes can be more flexible in terms of timing. This means that potentially there can be multiple classes during the week in smaller groups.
If you are interested or you know of someone who wants to learn bridge, please contact Anne Townsend by email at spondonoldschool@yahoo.com or phone 07377 555341

Through to the Vic Morris Semi-Final! |
Great achievement for 3 of our East Midlands White team!
The players, Paul Atkins, Mary Styles and Gill Whalley, plus John Griffin to make up the team of 4, beat Amanda Sowter's team in their DCBA Vic Morris Plate match. The team is now through to the semi-final of the event.
The Vic Morris is a teams-of-4 event run by DCBA. Each player in the team has to play 8 boards with every other player in their team. The DCBA updated the handicapping system this year to encourage less experienced players to play in the event. However, Paul, Mary, Gill and John won the match outright by 950 points without the need of their 2400 handicap (so won by 3350 overall)!

EAST MIDLANDS BRIDGE CLUB |
We are a friendly club. Visitors are very welcome. We pride ourselves on our welcome for novice players, to the extent that we restrict our players to Level 2 (this means that experienced players cannot play systems that make it hard for novice players to compete against).
All bridge currently suspended due to Coronavirus. But we are assessing playing online - see below.
We play on Monday nights (6.50 for 7.00 Start) at Chapel Street Spondon, when we have a host.
From 1 November, we will also play on Fridays at 10 am. Please email Anne Townsend (at spondonoldschool@yahoo.com) to check that there are sufficient tables for the Friday session to go ahead. Please also contact Anne if you need a partner.
Please note we are often open on Bank Holiday Mondays.
For any further information contact Liz Hall (01283 703705).

Bridge Suspended - Coronavirus |
East Midlands Bridge Club has suspended ALL bridge sessions until further notice.
This is because the Government has recommended cancellation of all unnecessary social gatherings.
Please take extra good care of yourselves and hopefully the world will return to normal soon
