Welcome to Cornwall Contract Bridge Association

COLIN POTE

Sad to hear that Colin Pote has passed away in Derriford Hospital on 3 July, the day after his 80th birthday. Colin was a Premier Life Master, and partnering Pat Meade or Mike Booth he was one of the strongest opponents in Cornwall for many, many years. He represented the county regularly in the Western League, and also in a byegone era when Cornwall was strong enough to enter the Tollemache Cup. Details of his funeral will be available on the Liskeard website in due course.

GLYN MEREDITH

More bad news on the same day as Colin's passing, is the sudden death of Glyn Meredith in his sleep during a walking holiday along Offa’s Dyke. Only two weeks ago, Glyn was celebrating his promotion to that of Premier Life Master. Glyn was a Chemistry teacher, who latterly moved around the country as a relief teacher. Although he had finally moved back to his native Cardiff, Glyn kept his bridge allegiance with Cornwall, for whom he played, usually with Geoff Smith, every Western League match he was available in the last three or four years. He played in as many National events as he could, and was our leading master points scorer in each of those years.

PACHABO CUP

29 County Associations entered the National Teams of Four Final, the Pachabo Cup, on the weekend of 8-9 June. Cornwall was represented by Geoff Smith & Glyn Meredith (who played all four sessions), Jo Bryant & Mick Robson (3 sessions), and Chris Bickerdike (2 sessions). The team had a brilliant first day, being placed 3rd overall, after 15 of their 28 3-board rounds. Sunday was much tougher, playing most of the strongest teams, and the team slipped down the field.

After originally being placed 14th overall, Cornwall was elevated to 12= as a result of a dramatic appeal in their match against the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire team. C&H were originally the outright winners of the event but they were demoted to second as a result of Cornwall's successful appeal on board 33 (Sunday afternoon) in their match against each other.

It was a very good effort by the Cornish team, one of the minnows of the EBU, to finish in the top half of the field. Each player won 2.99 green points.

WESTERN LEAGUE

The Western League has concluded for another year. Thank you to all 27 players who represented the county during the season. Despite winning only two of their seven matches (they had four very narrow defeats) the C team faired best finishing 3= with 68 VPs (70 is average). The A team finished sixth in their league with 63 VPs (3 wins, 4 defeats) with the B team finishing last in their league with 52 VPs (2 wins, 1 draw, 4 defeats).
