Didn't they do well!! |
Congratulations to our members who did so well in the ECATS simultaneous pairs raising money for Children in Need on November 5th 2023. They were competing against over 1,300 pairs across the country, Bharat and Rita managed to come 11th and Nieell and Stevie came 48th. Well done to them and thanks to all of you who took part and helped to raise money for such a good cause. |

Happy Birthday |
It was a big birthday for our director John. He spent the morning directing our face to face game where all the club members joined in singing him a Happy Birthday. A quieter celebration followed when he was taken out for a Birthday lunch with the club chair and secretary. We all appreciate everything that John does for the club, he is an excellent director and offers lots of support to our club members playing on the 12 board table.

Arthur gets the Crystal Bowl 2023 |
|
Every year we at CYBC award the Crystal Bowl to one of our members. This year we decided to award it to Arthur Harold.
This year he has not only organised our first charity Bridge Drive, he has also made significant strides towards setting up a Junior Bridge Club in a local school. We all wish him every success with this new venture.

CYBC's First Bridge Drive |

Charity Bridge Drive March 18th 2023
We all enjoyed a fun day at our first charity Bridge Drive. We raised money for ROSY which is a small local charity that provides respite care for parents of sick children. A cheque for £700 was handed over to a representative from ROSY. The food was great, and we welcomed players in from clubs around Oxfordshire.
The only person who didn’t have such a good day was the director John Rowe as all the software crashed and he ended up having to input all the scores manually.

Beginners and Central |
♠ ♥ ♣ ♦
Our Club meets twice a week, in the Village Hall on Tuesday morning and an online game on a Thursday morning. We are a very inclusive Club and on our Tuesday game we try to accommodate players of differing levels. We do this by running 3 separate events simultaneously. They are a game playing 18 boards for our long standing members and improving players, a more gentle session for players fairly new to the game or players who want to play at a more gentle pace (playing 12 boards) and then a table for beginners where they sit with a more experienced player and practice bidding and play. Beginners and players in the gentle session are supported by the tournament director and other more experienced players and can ask questions at any time.
As we do not have a resident teacher, what we recommend is that absolute beginners go on a weekend course where they can learn the basic elements of the game. Many of the larger Clubs will run a beginners course, the one we recommend is the one run by Cheltenham Bridge Club (you can find out details by visiting their website). After that we can accommodate beginners on our Tuesday session. We have recently linked with Basingstoke Bridge Club and they have been offering an online teaching course for our club. We have just completed a Year One course and are looking to see what we can offer for next term.

Congratulations to Nigel and his partner Gillian Lonsdale on their success at winning the Wessex League Daytime League, Division 1 for the third year running.
At CYBC, Nigel advises on those tricky bidding problems and helps the people playing 12 boards with both their bidding and play.

Learning Bridge
The Club is committed to enabling as many people as possible to learn and enjoy playing bridge. However, due to numbers now attending the Club on a Tuesday morning we are unable to offer a programme for absolute beginners. There are a small number of local tutors who organise courses. Several members of the Club have attended courses led by Francis Pike, in Cassington, and we would recommend them to anyone interesting in learning bridge in the Oxford area.
