Bewdley Bridge Club Holiday to Salisbury |
The club holiday to Salisbury took place from 17 to 19 October 2022 with 32 players competing in three evening and one afternoon bridge session.
The event was a huge success and following its success the club intends to add such a bridge holiday to its annual events calendar. It would be wonderful if even more members could participate in the 2023 holiday.
Big thanks to Eileen and Pauline for all their hard work organising the event

A Message from our Chairman |
Monday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge on RealBridge
As you know the club provides weekly duplicate sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings using the excellent facilities provided by RealBridge. I am delighted that these sessions attract such excellent table numbers.
You may perhaps not be aware that the club also plays online duplicate bridge on Monday afternoons with a start time of 2pm. We would be delighted to see more members playing in these sessions too, particularly as they are aimed at helping the less experienced players.
Many thanks for your continued loyal support for the club.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

Swiss Pairs, Thursday 23rd March 7pm Start |
Our next Thursday duplicate evening is a very special event. We have invited our good friends at Pershore Duplicate Bridge Club to join us for an evening of Swiss Pairs. The event promises to be most enjoyable and I do hope that we will get a good turnout.
All club members, regardless of their subscription and regardless of the sessions in the week in which they usually participate, are very welcome to play. The event is suitable for all levels of experience. There is no need to advise me of your intention to play.
Whilst it is possible to stage a Swiss Pairs event with a half table, this is not an ideal situation. I would therefore be extremely grateful if a pair would volunteer to act as hosts, stepping down if we do have a half table but playing if we have full tables.
I look forward to a big attendance for this event. Thursday table numbers continue to increase and the club calendar provides for a very varied programme for the year ahead.

A reminder to club members that we are playing Face To Face Bridge at Wharton Park Golf Club on Wednesday 29 March, with a start time of 6:45. It would be great if members could arrive in good time to allow for a prompt start.
Please can members who wish to attend this Face To Face session liaise with either me, or Eileen or Candy to advise us of their intentions. I hope that everyone who plays in the event will find the session enjoyable.
The club will also be running its usual Wednesday session online on RealBridge so bridge will be available to all members that evening.

Simultaneous Pairs, Week Commencing Monday 13 March 2023 |
The SIMS sessions are charitable and look to raise funds for very worthwhile causes. For this round of SIMS - The Charity Challenge Pairs - the supported charities are Mind - which supports people with mental health problems - and MacMillan Cancer Support, with the total proceeds being shared equally between the two charities.
Participation in the sessions is included in your club subscription and there is no additional payment required to Bewdley Bridge Club. You are welcome to play in as many of the SIMS sessions as you would like, regardless of the club subscription that you hold and the sessions in which you usually play.
You are requested to make a charitable donation and the detaails for this appear below. E-Cats Bridge suggest a donation of £3.00 per player per session, although clearly you could make a larger donation if you wished.
Payments should be made using online or mobile banking. Please make payments to Ecatsbridge Charity (you might need to type it as Charity EcatsBridge). If you are given a choice between it being a personal or a business account, you need to select business account.
The sort code is 20-83-50 and the account number is 60385239.
Please put BEWDLEY as the reference so that Ecats can allocate the donation to the right club.

Bewdley Bridge Club Holiday - October 2023 |
I contacted members on 23 February 2023 to advise of plans to hold a club bridge holiday in October 2023. The proposal was to stay at the Charlecote Pheasant Hotel near Stratford Upon Avon.
I have received positive feedback from members but some members have commented that the venue is very close to where we live and somewhat isolated for site seeing and shopping. I do have sympathy for this view - for me the location is only a 35 minute drive from home.
Pauline Terry has worked tirelessly on this project and has liaised with the same booking agency to identify an alternative proposal that I should like to put to members. This alternative is to stay in Dartmouth, South Devon at The Dartmouth Hotel
This seems to be an excellent hotel in a lovely location. I will give details of costs as soon as possible but they will be very similar to the previous hotel proposed.
Please can I have feedback as soon as possible about:-
- Whether members would be interested in holding the bridge holiday for October 2023 in Dartmouth;
- And what would be their preference between a local venue near Stratford Upon Avon or a destintion further away in Dartmouth that would perhaps have more of the feel of a holiday.
Many thanks and please rest assured that we are aiming to finalise arrangements for the bridge holiday as soon as possible.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

Bewdley Bridge Club Holiday, 9-11 October 2023 |
I am pleased to be able to give details of our proposed bridge holiday for 2023. Before doing so, I would like to give my warmest thanks to Pauline Terry for her tireless work in trying to identify a suitable and willing venue.
The proposal is to stay at Charlecote Pheasant Hotel, which is in Warwickshire, some five miles from Stratford Upon Avon.
The cost for the three nights would be £250 per person, with an additional £85 for sole occupancy.
I am now contacting members to identify provisional interest in this holiday in order to ensure that there are sufficient to make the event viable.
Please can you let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in joining what should be an excellent bridge holiday. There is no requirement at this stage to pay any monies to Bewdley Bridge Club.
I am hoping that we are able to commit to this holiday and build upon the success from our holiday last year.
Kindest Regards
David Halford

Swiss Teams Wednesday 18 January 2023 |
The club will be staging a Swiss Teams session on the above date with the usual 7pm start time. Previous teams events have been extremely popular and I look forward to another excellent evening of bridge.
As with previous teams events the teams will be pre-formed with a more experienced pair teaming up with a less experienced pair. This gives everyone a good chance of winning the competition.
Please can you let me know - and by Friday 13 January 2023 at the absolute latest - if you and your partner wish to play. It would be extremely helpful if a pair could volunteer to act as a host thereby ensuring that we have full teams of four.
The event is open to all members, regardless of the level of subscription paid and regardless of the sessions of the week in which an individual member normally plays.

The event will be on RealBridge and pair and county rankings will be published on the Midland Counties Congress website.
All entry fees for Bewdley members will be met by the club.

Down Under and Up and Over Competition |
The recent 'Down Under and Up and Over' Competition was a huge success, thanks to all.
The event was a huge success. We had people from Canada, South Africa, Kenya, Ireland, Ise of Man, UK, Australia and New Zealand. A few extras from Greece and Turkey. We had just short of 1,200 people over the two games.
Thank you for taking part. We couldn’t have done this without the help of all the bridge clubs and teachers who coordinated the entries.
Thank you also to the players for playing, and for helping to make the event run so smoothly. We were able to manage comfortably with only five directors.
On our site you can see the overall winners, nation winners, and a photo board with a selection of players (not all 1200 !).
The prize-money winners can get in touch with us by email, as described on the website.

Christmas Fun 5th and 6th December |
Are you up for a challenge? Your bridge club needs you!
Australia and New Zealand (“Down Unders”) have issued a challenge to the UK and Ireland (“Up Overs”). They, along with South Africa, would like to form a super-squad of pairs players, and play against UK and Ireland. There will be 20 boards to play.
When will all this take place?
- Monday 5th Dec at 8.00pm GMT
- Tuesday 6th Dec at 8:00am GMT (yes, an early start i realise but do please do think about it).
What does it cost?
Absolutely nothing, just your time and effort please :)
Who can play?
The competition is open to anyone and the sections will be divided as follows
- High level players – roughly county-standard players or better.
- Club players - majority of us
- Learners - who have been playing for more than 6 months
should be fun :)

Bridge Cancelled Monday 19th September |
As you will know, Monday 19th September is the day of the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the EBU has decided to cancel all online BBO games run by the national organisation on that day. It is for clubs to make their own decisions about their games, and your committee has decided to cancel our regular Monday game that day as a mark of respect.

A Message from our Chairman - An Update and Renewing Your Club Subscription |
I am contacting you to provide an update on activities provided by Bewdley Bridge Club and to invite you to renew your club subscription for the six month period from October 2022 to March 2023.
The club will continue to provide a diverse programme of online bridge using the excellent RealBridge platform. All three of our weekly duplicate sessions - Monday afternoon, Wednesday evening and Thursday evening - remain popular and provide the opportunity to play friendly but competitive bridge. We have developed our programme so that it now includes Simultaneous Pairs, Swiss Pairs and Swiss Teams events. We have also transformed the club handicap competition so that it is staged more frequently. We continue to look for innovative opportunities to develop the club calendar to maximise enjoyment for members.
In addition to these sessions, the club provides morning social and teams sessions which remain very popular and which have helped develop new players to join our ranks.
Thanks to Eileen, we have the most progressive teaching programme in the county. New initiatives, such as the recently announced teaching in Shatterford, will continue to be developed. The club will continue to develop outreach initiatives aimed at widening bridge participation including, we hope, working with local education providers to attract younger people to the game.
This all points to a thriving club. Some of our table numbers, such as the 14 teams that played in Swiss Teams on 27 July and the 13 tables that played Swiss Pairs on 17 August have been extraordinary. I wish to extend my thanks to all club members for their loyalty and support. In particular, I wish to thank everyone who continues to assist with club management, not the least those members who have directed online bridge - a thankless task but always delivered professionally.
I am immensely grateful for the support of a superb committee and would wish to thank Eileen, Bob, Sue, Alan and Jonathan for their continued membership of the committee and to welcome Belinda and Candy as newer members of the committee.
Club finances are in good health and were superbly stewarded by Bob Law up to 31 March 2022. Belinda Morgan has now taken over as club treasurer and we continue to enjoy excellent financial management and reporting. In the context of the strong financial position, I am delighted to report that subscription rates for the period from October 2022 to March 2023 will be frozen at their previous level. As with previous six month periods I am inviting you to make a single subscription payment which will cover all bridge to which you have subscribed. Again you can choose whether to purchase a single or multiple weekly subscription for club duplicate sessions. Also you can purchase single or multiple subscriptions for morning sessions. Multiple subscriptions are heavily discounted for the simple reason that we wish to encourage players to play as frequently as their circumstances allow.
The subscription rates for online bridge for the next six months are as follows:-
Duplicate Single Weekly Play £45
Duplicate Multiple Weekly Play £70
Morning Single Weekly Play £15
Morning Weekly Play £30
So the maximum subscription, which would cover every online bridge activity provided by the club, would be £100 (equating to around £4 per week). Your committee considers that this represents excellent value for money and I really hope that you will renew your subscription.
Please will you pay your subscription to Bewdley Bridge Club. The account is a business account and its number is 10301671 with sort code 20-82-70. Please when making a payment put your name as the transaction reference.
In summary, I would wish to repeat my thanks to all club members for their support and I really hope that you will renew your subscription and continue to participate in the progression of our club.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

F2F and Online Classes for Beginners, Improvers and Advancers |
Online Improvers/Advancers
Eilleen has been asked by a small group among her 'improvers' to start some advanced lessons. These will be on-line and will be a similar format to the Mondays, so Zoom and then RealBridge. These will be held from 7pm on alternate Thursday evenings from September. Topics to be studied could include
- What does 2S mean over 1NT?
- Responding to an overcall
- Doubles
- Cue bids (Michaels)
- What is a relay?
- Strategy for improving my scores
- Bidding beyond game (Blackwood, key card, Gerber)
- Landy (defence over 1NT opener)
- Why would you open 4H?
Please contact Eileen for further details and to book a place.
F2F Beginners and Improvers
Eileen will be starting in September a F2F Bridge Beginners Class on a Thursday afternoon at Shatterford village hall 4.30pm until 6.30pm. Please spread the word if you know anyone who would be interested in this. As she is hiring the hall anyway it is possible to have some separate tables for an improvers section too if there were enough people who wanted to do that. Please contact Eileen for further details and to book a place.
Online Beginners
Eileen's Online Bridge Beginners Lessons will commence on Monday 19th September with a start time of 9.30am. Please see 'Eileens Online Lessons' on the left hand menu for more details and the links to join in. These lessons will be from the beginning and are aligned to the EBU yellow book.
Please contact Eileen for further details and to book a place.
All of these lessons above will be dependent on numbers so please spread the word among friends and relatives who you think might be interested. The cost of all lessons is £5 per session.

Special Events in August 2022 |
Many thanks for continuing to support the club in such large numbers. We had 14 teams playing in the Swiss Teams which was tremendous. Our regular programme continues during August but there are two special events to which I should like to draw your attention.
Swiss Pairs, Wednesday 17 August 2022, 7pm Start
This will be our first staging of Swiss Pairs on RealBridge. In order to stage this event we cannot have a half table so I should be really grateful if one pair could volunteer to act as a "host" for the evening. This would involve logging onto RealBridge as normal but waiting in the lobby to see if they were required to complete a full table. The Swiss Pairs format would be played over 5 x 4 board rounds so would feel similar to the Swiss Teams format we played. RealBridge software is absolutely sensational and will deal with all the isuues around the movement so just relax and enjoy!
Club Handicap Trophy Heat 2, Thursday 18 August 2022, 7pm Start
The club handicap competition has been modified for 2022/23 and is now being held over four quarterly sessions on Thursday evenings during 2022/23. The second of the four heats is on Thursday 18 August. All club members, regardless of the subscription that they hold and regardless of the weekly sessions in which they usually participate, are very welcome to play in this competition. Many thanks to Alan Booth for all of the work in calculating the handicaps that will be applied to the actual results in these sessions.
I do hope that these events and indeed all our club sessions are enjoyable to members and continue to be well supported.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

Swiss Teams Wednesday 27th July |
Many thanks to club members for supporting this event so strongly. I am delighted to report that we will have 14 teams competing. Details of the pre-selected teams appear below. Please join your team mates at your home table at the start of play. Playing in the event is easy - the incredible RealBridge software deals with all the movements so relax and enjoy the event. I am very grateful to Richard Greenwood, who will be directing the event, and to Alan Booth for organising the team selection which is entirely based upon your average scores across all duplcate sessions over the last year. I am also grateful to Petrena Walley and Jennifer Romer, who have agreed to act as a reserve pair for the evening.
If, for any reason, circumstances change and you cannot play, please let me know immediately. Changes to the movement are always problematic and the Swiss movement works best with an even number of tables.
The teams and their home table numbers are:-
1. N/S Eileen Oakley / Chad Chadwick. E/W Michaela Valance / Belinda Morgan
2. N/S Lorna Fellows / Rufus Ulyet. E/W Sue Deakin / Paul Surplice
3. N/S Bob Law / Steve Clifton. E/W Wendy and Eric Silverstone
4. N/S David Brown / Rachel Ward. E/W Carole Adamek / Sarah Rosie
5. N/S Sue Evans / Louise Wilson. E/W Ann Sutherland / Nicola Downes
6. N/S Bill Rosie / Billy Nicholson. E/W David Holdsworth / Robin Humphreys
7. N/S Richard Greenwood / Jonathan Price. E/W Linda Symonds / Clare Maiden
8. N/S Richard Litchfield / Ian Darch. E/W John Hellens / Chris Gait
9. N/S Sue Knoll / Duncan Holman. E/W Val Ridding / Chris Greatbatch
10. N/S Anne Freeston / Peter Dobson. E/W Elaine Bell / Lolly Turner
11. N/S John and Sylvia Fletcher. E/W John and Enid Darby
12. N/S Paul Bryant / Edward Sage. E/W Pauline Terry / Margaret Harper
13. N/S Philip Morgan / Onnie Powers. E/W Barry Menheneott / Dinah Spillane
14. N/S David and Sarah Halford. E/W Derek Moses / David Malcolmson

Swiss Teams, Wednesday 27 July 2022 |
The club will be staging a Swiss Teams event on Wednesday 27 July 2022 with the usual 7pm start. Previous events have been extremely popular - 16 tables participated in April - and I look forward to another excellent evening of bridge.
As with previous teams events the teams will be pre-formed with a more experienced pair teaming up with a less experienced pair. This gives everyone a good chance of winning the competition.
These events need considerable pre-planning. I am grateful to Richard Greenwood for offering to direct the event.
Please can you let me know as soon as possible if you and your partner wish to play. It would be extremely helpful if a pair could volunteer to act as a host thereby ensuring that we have full teams of four.
The event is open to all members, regardless of the level of subscription paid and regardless of the sessions of the week in which an individual member normally plays.
Swiss Teams is a superb form of bridge and I look forward to you playing in this event.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

Simultaneous Pairs Sessions in Week Commencing Monday 4 July 2022 |
♥ Please make a donation to charity - see instructions below ♥
Bewdley Bridge Club is delighted to report that all three of our duplicate sessions this week - Monday afternoon, Wednesday evening and Thursday evening - will comprise Simultaneous Pairs (SIMS) events. The sessions will be held on RealBridge and just follow the usual links to play. SIMS are sessions where identical boards are played in all the various bridge clubs that have entered the event - usually at least 30 clubs nationally and internationally. They therefore represent a great opportunity to play competitive bridge in the usual relaxed setting for which Bewdley is renowned. The SIMS are managed by E-CATS Bridge, with whom our club has an established long term association.

I would encourage every member to participate in these sessions which represent one of the highlights of the club year. These are not elite competitions - far rather they are aimed at maximising participation by club bridge players and raising funds for very worthy causes. You are welcome to play in as many of the SIMS sessions as you would like, regardless of the club subscription that you hold and the sessions in which you usually play.
I wish everyone playing in the SIMS the very best of luck and look forward to seeing some excellent scores from Bewdley players.

An offer of help if you are experiencing the latest RealBridge problems |
Unwanted icons in front of the bidding box, when using Microsoft Edge
If you use the Edge browser and it has just been updated, you may notice these icons in front of the bidding box:
It is caused by a feature of Edge called “Visual Search”. You should disable this feature for the RealBridge site. To do that, hover over the icon (or the upper of the two icons), so that you can see the lower icon with three dots in it. Click on the three dots, and a submenu will appear, like this:
Then do “Hide for this site”. (If you want to disable this feature for all websites, you can instead do “Hide always”.)
Echo problems when there is an iPad at the table
If you use an iPad, and other people have started complaining about hearing an echo: the problem is probably caused by your iPad. There is a solution. The solution has to be applied to your iPad.
If you have recently started hearing an echo of your own voice: the problem is probably caused by somebody else’s iPad. If it happens all evening, it is probably your partner’s iPad. If it only happens at some tables, it is probably an opponent’s iPad. There is a solution. The solution has to be applied to the iPad.
This problem occurs when the iPad has been upgraded to iOS 15.4 or iOS 15.5, and the iPad is one of:
- iPad 7th Generation or earlier
- iPad Pro 2nd Generation or earlier
- iPad Air 2nd Generation or earlier
- iPad Mini 4th Generation or earlier
If your iPad is newer than that, your iPad is not causing the echo problem.
If you don’t know which iPad model you have, look in Settings: “General” on the left, “About” on the right, “Model Name” on the right.
Solution:
This may seem strange, but it does work.
You will need a headset that has a standard 3.5mm audio jack (or anything else that has one of these jacks). That is, the type of plug that has a single circular pin, with a few black stripes on it, like this:
It can be headphones, or earbuds, or a hands-free kit for a mobile phone, or a cable, or even just the plug without anything attached to it.
It doesn’t matter how many black stripes it has. It doesn’t matter how good it is. It doesn’t matter if it actually works or not. All it needs is the plug.
If you don’t have anything with this type of plug, you can buy a headset or cable with a 3.5mm plug very cheaply. If you can’t find one, email support@realbridge.online and we will post one to you.
This is what you have to do:
- When you are going to play on RealBridge, go to the session as normal and sit at a table.
- Plug the headset (or other device) into the headphone socket on your iPad. The socket is on the short edge of the iPad, on the same side as the power button (that is, the opposite side to where the power cable goes in).
- Unplug the headset again. You don’t have to keep it plugged in.
- Use your iPad as normal.
- If you get disconnected, or if you click the “redial” button (the two curved arrows at the bottom), you will need to repeat this process.
This works because the physical action of plugging in and unplugging the audio jack resets the echo-cancellation on the iPad.
If your iPad doesn’t have a headphone socket, then please contact us.
This is just a workaround – in the medium term we expect Apple to fix this in their software.

Unwanted icons in front of the bidding box, when using Microsoft Edge
If you use the Edge browser and it has just been updated, you may notice these icons in front of the bidding box:
It is caused by a feature of Edge called “Visual Search”. You should disable this feature for the RealBridge site. To do that, hover over the icon (or the upper of the two icons), so that you can see the lower icon with three dots in it. ..........

Annual General Meeting 2022 |
The decision has been made to hold this years Bewdley Bridge Club AGM at
Wharton Park Golf club on Wednesday 29th June 2022 with a start time of 6.15pm.
The meeting will be as brief as possible commencing at 6.15pm and will then be followed by an evening of F2F duplicate bridge at 7pm.
In order to make sure this runs as smoothly as possible - and that we get to play some 'real life' bridge could you please confirm back to Eileen your intention to attend both the AGM or not and to play bridge or not.
It will not be possible for you to raise AOB on the evening of the AGM as we fear this will delay the meeting unnecessarily and would ask that you give some thought to this and let David Halford know of any agenda items asap and by Friday 17th June at the latest.
As a result of this decision there will NOT be a session set up to play on Realbridge on the evening of 29th June 2020. We do sincerely hope that anyone who usually plays regularly on a Wednesday and is not able to attend the meeting might chose to play on the Thursday evening and/or the Monday afternoon as an alternative.
Thanking you in adavance of your support for your Club

Friday Afternoon Bridge at Wharton Park Golf Club - A Message from our Chairman |
For the last four Friday afternoons we have played Face To Face Bridge in the superb setting of Wharton Park Golf Club. Huge thanks are due to Eileen and Candy for making these events possible, to Paul Bryant for helping with directing and to Chad Chadwick for helping in so many ways so that everyone could enjoy their game.
Sadly table numbers, which have peaked at four, have been insufficient to justify continuing with this trial. This is one of the biggest disappointments of my seven years as Club Chairman as I believe that the club is in danger of missing an enormous opportunity. Three more tables, say, would make these sessions viable.
I would really appreciate feedback from members as to why these sessions have not been popular. A weekly daytime Face To Face session would be a major additional offer to the membership if it could attract sufficient interest. In particular feedback around alternative times in the week would be very helpful. I would hope that we could all agree that Wharton Park is the ideal venue for daytime bridge, with its excellent facilities. Please contact me on this email address.
Please do not make comments about Wednesday evening bridge. That is an entirely separate issue, one which your Committee continues to explore.
Regardless of my disappointment about Friday afternoon bridge, I remain extremely grateful for the amazing support you continue to give to our online sessions. I recently set our some details of the events programme for the year and I hope that it generates good levels of interest.
Kindest Regards,
David Halford

Face to Face Bridge This Friday Afternoon Cancelled |
We have reluctantly decided to postpone the beginning of our trial Face to Face (F2F) bridge sessions and have cancelled Friday 1st and Friday 8th April at Wharton Park Golf Club due to the rapid expansion in the number of Covid cases in our area.
We feel this is the only sensible course of action. The situation will be reviewed in a couple of weeks and hopefully we can begin a trial of six further Friday afternoons commencing Friday 22nd April.
We are sorry to disappoint those of you who were looking forward to starting to play F2F bridge on 1st April but we hope you understand our reasoning.
If you had been intending to join us at Wharton Park on 1st April it would be most helpful if you could contact Candy Shelley by phone or email to let her know your thoughts about participating in the proposed trial of six Friday afternoon sessions starting after Easter.
