Bulletin

Many thanks to Mike Tedd for providing material on the early days of Porthcawl Congress. Our website already contained some information on the more recent years, but there is a huge gap between 1945 and 2008!!  If anyone has any pictures/posters/programmes etc for the intervening years which we could include, then I would be delighted if they could email me.

David Newman R.I.P.

The Committee was saddened to learn of the recent death of David Newman.  David was a former President of the Welsh Bridge Union and more recently of the West Wales Bridge Association.  He was a familiar face at our events, both as a player and as a director at Area events.  His funeral was held last week.

We extend our condolences to Norma and family.

Perry/Spickett/President's Cup 2025 - deadline extended

***  Applications are invited from established pairs from the Western Area who would like to form part of our team, please email Peter Milewski at wwba.sec.pjm@gmail.com  by Monday, 14th April   ***

This year it's the turn of the Northern area to host the event on the weekend of 31st May - 1st June., We understand it will be held at Llandudno Bridge Club.

Teams of six from each area will be competing against each other in each event.  The Area association provides subsidies for the players.

The committee will be picking the teams at their next meeting;  the Perry is open and the Spickett is for ladies only, whilst the President's Cup is aimed at players new to competitive bridge, i.e. those with less than 25 Green points. Congratulations to our team who won the President's Cup last year;  we hope you will repeat the performance this year!

What a brilliant Congress!!

Porthcawl's 75th Anniversary Congress at the newly refurbished Seabank Hotel was deemed a huge success. The Friday afternoon kicked off with an Open Pairs session for the twenty-eight enthusiastic pairs who had arrived for an early start.  This was won by Susan Munday & Pat Jenkins. After dinner the competition began in earnest with fifty pairs competing in the first session of the Green pointed Swiss Pairs competition for the Red Dragon Cup,  Two further sessions were run on Saturday, resulting in a 3-way tie between John Holland & Raymond Semp, Ollie Burgess & Alice Coptcoat and Oliver Cowan & Stephen Berson. After an evening in the bar followed by a good night's sleep most returned on Sunday where they were joined by number of local teams to compete in the Swiss Teams event.  Thirty teams competed in two sessions, with an excellent finger buffet provided at half time. The eventual winners were John Holland & Raymond Semp, Paul Denning & Alistair Catchpole who were just 1 VP ahead of Ollie Burgess & Alice Coptcoat, Jason Hackett & Maria Whelan.

Running a 'Holiday Congress' alongside the main Green Pointed events gave the place a great atmosphere, as did the singer who entertained us in the bar on Saturday evening.  For those preferring a more relaxed  game the Holiday Congress provided three stand alone Pairs sessions with seven pairs playing on the Friday evening and nine at each of the two Saturday sessions. The Friday winners were Jenny Rogers & Elizabeth Redrup and the  Saturday morning by Gail Wicks & Debbie Page. On the Saturday afternoon, Dave Nicklin & Linda Spiri shared the honours with Paul Sutton, whose original partner was unable to play.

The whole weekend was planned and organised by Sarah Amos & Lee Collier (pictured above) and directed by Sarah, ably assisted by Rachel.

2025 Laidlaw Murray

Congratulations to Paul & Sophie Cunningham, Fu Cheung & Viking Yuen (pictured above) runaway winners of today's WWBA Teams of Four competition at Bancyfelin.  At the lunch break they were well clear of their nearest rivals (Peter Milewski, Mike Baker, Nicky Hancock & Martin Sheppard)  who made a valiant effort in the second session, but the gap was too big.  In 3rd position came Mike Best, David Birt, Tony Disley & Simon Richards.  Seven teams enjoyed a great day's bridge, organised and ably directed by our ATO Dave Nicklin. Thank you Dave!
