Despite Storm Ciara, everyone participating in the WSBC bridge holiday braved the elements on Sunday February 9th and arrived safely at the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth. They were rewarded with a warm welcome from the hotel staff who once again provided excellent service and wonderful food. The winds abated over the next 3 days and sea air and sunshine were appreciated by many.

The 5 bridge sessions were brilliantly directed by Graham & Berry Hedley whose charm, flair and friendliness is unsurpassed. Neil Watts and Graham combined their talents to give 2 morning seminars which were not only very informative but exceedingly entertaining. Thanks must also go to Brian Kirkdale whose IT expertise helped enormously with the scoring.

Flight A and Flight B prizes were given for each session and the winners were:

Passing of Ian Watt

I am sorry to announce the passing of Ian Watt, who many of you will remember playing with me from the time he joined the club in the 1980s on his return to this country having worked for some years in Japan for Upjohn, the pharmaceutical company, we first met when Ian was receiving dental treatment from my wife and asked her who was responsible for the bridge magazines in the waiting room, and our partnership was formed.  I have played with Ian at least once a month since that time until the club was forced to close by the virus.  I know Ian played bridge at university and picked up the Precision Club system during his stay in Japan where he played it with some of the then Japanese ladies team.  In all the time I played with him he never criticised my awful play no matter how much it deserved it, and I can honestly say with his demise that not only the club but the world has lost a true gentleman.

Norman Hardy

Ian passed on Thursday 19 November 2020.

CHARLES ENDEAN

We are sad to announce that Charles died shortly before Christmas.

Charles was 95 and had been living independently in his own home in Wokingham near his daughter’s house. He moved there about three years ago.

Charles did a huge amount for our club over many years and was a founder member..
