President Carolyn Sabroske called the meeting to order. Kate made a motion to approve the minutes from the March 8 meeting with a second from Carolyn Miller. Carolyn M gave treasurer’s report. She also informed Board that the unit is a 501(c)7 corporation which means donations are not tax deductible. After a motion by Kate and seconded by Bonni the treasurer’s report was accepted.
Nancy Wilson addressed Unit Board concerning participation in the Longest Day. Proceeds (minus expenses) would go to support the Alzheimer’s Society. Therefore, there will be no expense for the Unit. Dee moved to participate and Margie seconded motion. It will be held at the Bridge Center on June 22. There will be 5 bridge games and other activities throughout the day beginning at 9 a.m. Nancy Wilson will chair the event. After all plans are made fliers will be put out.
Education report by Penny: Eric Hill has acquired permission and developed a plan for beginning bridge to be taught as an intramural activity for sixth graders in four Des Moines middle schools beginning this Fall. Four teachers from the Bridge Center have been identified but we still need 4 others to help out. Interested people need to contact Eric. The ACBL provides all of the necessary materials free of charge. Smartboard Technology purchase has been put on hold for the time being. Check our website for other classes being offered. Bonni Newton is organizing a 4-session mentoring program. There will be mentors for players with 0-199 points. Then those mentors will become mentees with advanced players being their mentors.
The Spring Festival went well. Player numbers were down and Unit discussed options to increase attendance. Our Medallion Party had 20 ½ tables.
