IRISH Junior Bridge Fundraiser |
Watch “Aces & Knaves” – Fundraiser for Irish Junior Bridge
by CBAI | May 31, 2021 | Uncategorized
We are looking for your support for a fundraising venture for Irish junior bridge, please.
We are pleased to inform you that the CBAI has secured rights to stream the Irish premiere of a great film about bridge, called “Aces & Knaves”, which will be available for viewing online for ten days from 1 June (via the link below). The film has already been shown in North America, and has been very well received. The IMDB reviews website describes it as “a documentary about mental gymnastics, competition, and cheating in bridge – the most complex game ever invented by the human mind.” Lots of very well-known bridge players feature, and Irish viewers can keep an eye out for an appearance from our junior team on one of their trips to the US. The cost of the stream is $12.50 (approximately €10), of which half (after a small platform charge) will go directly to Irish junior bridge, so in addition to spending an enjoyable hour or so, you’ll be supporting the future of Irish bridge at a time when other fundraising opportunities are limited.

In addition, you are invited to attend a special Zoom seminar being held in conjunction with the Grand Master Bridge Congress, on Sunday 6 June at 8 pm, and featuring Ireland’s top player, Tom Hanlon, the NPC of the Irish Open team, Grainne Barton, Irish junior international, John Connolly, and our international Tournament Director, Fearghal O’Boyle, in conversation with Thomas MacCormac on the current trends in Irish and international bridge. There will also be an opportunity to hear “Aces & Knaves” director Jackie Paré discuss the origins and development of the film. We’ll post the link for that session later in the week.
To pique your interest, you’ll find a couple of short trailers here – a general trailer https://vimeo.com/300083768 and a short trailer featuring the Irish Juniors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQkHC9bu_OU
Please do anything you can to raise awareness of this fundraising effort. Tell your friends, including your non-bridge playing friends (it might give them an insight into what it is about the game that consumes us all so!) and post the link on your social media. Thanks in advance for your support with this fundraiser – it is greatly appreciated.

CBAI and the BBO / Bridgebase.com |
When the current crisis occurred, there was a massive surge to play bridge online for those that were missing out on playing in a club. This put increased pressure on the BBO website and for that reason they were unable to grant TD / Director capability to individuals. The CBAI were very proactive in agreeing to get Director level access to BBO which was based on those clubs operating in a paid environment. So our free period has come to an end and we will need to start charging for bridge going forward. The big upside to this is that we can decide on what time we play at.
You will need to put some money into your BBO account, instructions can be found here add money - BBO$
