What should I have done???
When you sense a misfit, stop bidding!

Lois Lane asks our BCON Expert:

I’m North and dealer. Here is a replay of my bidding and thinking:

  1. I’m dealer. 6hcp, 6 1/2 losers if my partner has H or C. But, of course he’ll bid spades
  2. I am physic, and yes, he opens 1 Spade
  3. Hmmm… Can’t bid my clubs, that’s Drury…. Don’t like to bid NT with a void… even if it is in his suit…. OK, if we can find a H or C fit, I actually a pretty good hand… I’ll bid 2H, hope he has 2, and simply passes…
  4. Well, he really likes his S and must have 6+. But, 7 out against him is still not good. I know I’m too high, but I’ll bid 3C, and will pass whatever he does. I hope at this point he figures I’m void in S, as I didn’t bid NT.
  5. So, he goes back to H. If we’re going to be in 3, better the major than the minor.
  6. I play 3H down 2.
  7. Superman, what should I have done??

Superman's response:

Hi Lois,

Your correct response is 1NT.  You have 6 pts including an A.  Must respond in case partner has "a monster".  Partner will rebid 2S.  You PASS!  Opener's hand is not worth a jump to 3S even though some hand evaluation processes may get its value up to 16 points.  Very poor spade quality.  3S an overbid IMHO.  (I know this wasn't part of your question, just an added bit of advice.)

A general rule: When you sense a misfit, stop bidding.  Don't keep trying to correct.  You will just get deeper.

Your hand nowhere near good enough for 2H. Even though a passed hand you still need close to 10-11 pts and a 5 card suit. A response of 1NT is one of the few NT bids that doesn't promise some sort of flat hand.  A catch-all in this situation.  Nothing else fits.

A double dummy analysis shows that 2S is down 2 but that assumes perfect defense which you don't always get.  In practice you will probably get out for down 1.
