MICHAEL NEWMAN 1960 to 2020

Michael Newman

We are all so sad to have to let members know that Michael lost his fight with cancer today.

He has been a wonderful beacon for the promotion of bridge in the Manchester area for many, many years and will be sadly missed.

There is an expansive history of Michael's life and achievements on the MCBA website.

Rest in peace MJN.

Michael Newman's funeral service at Howe Bridge crematorium took place on Thursday 26th March.  A few close friends attended (well separated) and a large number of other friends watched it online.

If you missed the funeral and wish to see it, then the service will be back online with the same login details within 2 working days for a period of 28 days.

The website is www.obitus.com  username howe1344 password 900240

It is hoped that a celebration of Michael's life will take place in the Autumn that everyone will be welcome to go to.

At the MCBA council meeting on Tuesday it was agreed to buy a new trophy for the first division of the Manchester League in honour of Michael.

Please could you come and help our beginners on a Tuesday night?

Remember how you felt when you had only just had a handful of lessons and were about to start playing in a proper supervised game?

Scary or what?!!

We thought it would be good if some of our members could come along on a Tuesday night to act as a "mentor" to our newest people - a bit of personal support to make everyone feel that much more comfortable. You don't need to commit to every Tuesday but whenever you can would be great....and no table money of course.

Dave will be running the session and if you can make it please give him a quick ring on 07717 252114 to say you plan to be there (7.15 for 7.30 start)

THANKYOU!

Picture of a woman playing bridge online

Since Lockdown, even those of us who in the past may have shied away from technology, have found ourselves drawn by the game of bridge to dip our toes in the virtual world. Indeed if you haven’t already given it a go there’s never been a better time with plenty of options for every level of player.

Bridge can help improve the mental fitness of those at every age. You are never too young or old to start playing bridge and learning on-line has never been easier. If you have children or grandchildren no doubt you have weekly zoom meetings so why not add a bit of fun and teach them to play?

Writing for the Sunday Express S-Magazine, Essex EBU member, Cath Fox, explores the new virtual world of Bridge during Lockdown and how this has been good for bridge, whatever your age or profile. You can read the full article in this week's Sunday Express on 26th July.

RICHARD FLEISCHMAN
RICHARD FLEISCHMAN

We have heard that Richard Fleischman sadly passed away in March this year.

He was a much loved regular visitor to Manchester from America since the days of the Central Bridge Club in the late 1960s.

He was initially very friendly with Irving Blakey and over the years made a number of visits to Manchester as part of his academic research forming close friendships with Irving and Joy, Leslie Klein, Kevin and Celia Comrie, Michelle Brunner and John Holland plus many others.

He stayed with us for about a month on one of his visits in the 1980s which was particularly memorable for him being chased around our house by our young daughter Leonie brandishing her toy snake!

Our condolences and best wishes go to his friends and family.

BILL HIRST

We are sad to have to pass on the news that Bill has passed away following complications after surgery.. He was a great supporter of Manchester Bridge Club and served on our MBC Committee in the early 80's. He had a great love of tournament bridge and was a keen and successful rubber bridge player at Palatine Road. I last played with him 20 years ago and we were due to play together this year at Killarney.

There is a full obituary for him on the MBCA website,

He was the current holder of the EBU Seniors Congress Teams and Pairs in addition to his other successes. He also served as NPC for the English Open Team in the European Championships in Pu, France in 2008. He and John Hassett finished top of the Butlers in the 2006 European Seniors Teams in Warsaw. He was very easy to play with and had good victories with a number of partners including Leslie Klein, Alan Nelson, and Jeremy Dhondy - and of course his son Andrew!

He will be missed.
