There has been much debate amongst members with long memories about the starting date of Lowestoft Bridge Club - the favoured date being sometime in the mid-sixties. After a bit of research at Lowestoft Record Office, trawling through microfilms of old Lowestoft Journals, we have discovered that we are older than any of us thought. The opening meeting of the club was held on Friday 30th September 1955, at 7 pm, at 160, London Road South. Robert remembers this to be a cafe, owned by Bill Burwood and his wife Vera, called "Vera Porter's". This is how the cafe looks now (with acknowledgements to Google Street View!) |
