Welcome |
Welcome to Joan's Bridge Club, serving Rancho Palos Verdes since, well, a very long time ago. Joan Johnson is our host and director. From our home at Fred Hesse Park Community Center we offer ACBL-sanctioned duplicate games on Mondays and Tuesdays ($10). The Monday game runs from 11:00 AM sharp to about 2:30 PM. The Tuesday game ($10), starting at 11:30, combines a half-hour lesson with play until 2:00 PM. No need to come with a parfner on the Tuesday session, we'll match you up. Bring your nametag if you have one at either of these events.
In addition to duplicate, Hesse Park also hosts party bridge on Thursdays, 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM ($1). No need to come with a partner on party bridge Thursdays, we rotate partners in a less formal bridge play arrangement. Coffee and potluck snacks provided. We have a short break for brownbagged lunch. The most affordable bridge in Los Angeles County at only one dollar. (First timers free). Yes, sometimes you DO get more than you pay for.
Last but not least, Hesse Park evening classes serve to introduce beginners into the fun challenges of contract bridge. Classes are in conjunction with the Rancho Palos Verdes Parks & Recreation Department. No need to be a city resident to join in.

Bridgemate tip |
Two suggestions to smooth operation on our Bridgemate terminals.
1. If at all possible, enter the contract immediately ... before the opening lead.
2. East-West, take your review seriously. Hit the "accept" button AFTER looking at the board number and result.

For those just getting into bridge ... |
Stay tuned for the next 9-week session with Rancho Palos Verdes Parks & Recreation classes, beginning January 23, 2025. Labeled as "Advancing Beginners", this Thursday evening class is for those who know the basic rules and conventions of bridge, but want some mental polishing on the finer points or newer conventions. Your teacher is Andy Smith, known for both his light hearted presentation style and the quality of baked goods for the refreshment break. No need to sign up with a partner. Our learning format is Party Bridge. After a brief introduction, you and your tablemates will play and analyze hands centered on a nightly topic. A special teaching feature: all the hands you solve are taken from hands actually played in local or not-so-local bridge clubs. How does your bidding and play match the range from the veterans?
What about players totally new to the game? We generally offer a Total Beginners class either starting in Septembers or, with enough interest, on an ad hoc basis. If interested, contact Andy Smith: andy.smith@cox.net. Also within the South Bay bridge sphere, see classes at Agile Bridge Club. See https://www.bridgewebs.com/agile
