System
If you come along to Stepping Stones you are welcome to play any methods with which you are comfortable (and our hosts will certainly accommodate anything you can explain) but if you play with a 'regular' this is basic system you can expect.
2014 Graduates
The system card is appropriate for our students finishing the course in 2014.
The methods are distilled from the two EBU books Learning Bridge and the second-year follow-up, Continuing Bridge.
- 'By the book' (EBU20A).
Weak no-trump, four-card majors, weak-twos in diamonds, hearts and spades
- Stayman and red-suit transfers over 1NT
- Splinter raises (shortage plus fit) of 1-level openings
- Pudding raise (3NT) of 1-major openings
- †1NT – 2♠ to play 3-minor
- 2NT as an enquiry over partner's weak-two
- Landy 2♣ for majors over an opponent's one no-trump
- †Two suited overcalls of opponents' 1-level openings (cue-bid and unusual no-trump)
† left undefined by EBU course.
Five-Card Majors
This is aligned to the talk given in 2016 and based upon An Introduction to Five-Card Majors written earlier.
- Five-card majors, longer minor (EBU20A).
Weak no-trump, five-card majors, longer minor, three weak-twos
Other treatments are as per four-card majors above with two additions:
- 1♥/♠ – 2NT is a game-forcing raise
- Against a suit contract, the lead of a king asks for count, other honours for attitude
