Other Interventions
Overcalling One No-Trump
- A one no-trump overcall shows 15-18 high-card points with at least one but preferably two stops in the bid suit.
- Prefer to call 1NT if you are within range even if your hand is not a classic no-trump shape. It helps partner to know your strength.
- Agree to 'Systems On' responses.
- For stronger hands double first.
Takeout Doubles
- Normally opening strength with shortage in opponents' suit (can be slightly weaker if singleton or void in opponents suit).
- Very willing to support any of the other three suits (in particular any unbid major).
- May also be a very strong hand (too strong for any other action).
- Do not bid just because you have an opening hand. Suit and no-trump overcalls and doubles describe particular hands to your partner.
Responding to a Takeout Double
- You must respond unless you want to convert to a penalty double.
- Making a minimum bid does not show any points (0 to 8).
- With 9-11 jump.
- With 12+ points force. (Remember unassuming cue-bid.)
- A shapely hand can be considered stronger than just its high card point count.
