We begin our Top Ten Conventions with Landy, my preferred defence to an opposing opening bid of 1 NT. It is important to be able to show a hand with both majors and in the Landy convention, a 2 ♣ overcall over their 1 NT shows at least nine cards in ♥s and ♠s and about nine or more points. Responder merely bids his longer major at the two-level, unless he has an unexpectedly good hand, in which case he can jump. Note that with equal length in the majors Responder should reply 2 ♦ to 2 ♣, enabling Opener to bid his longer major.

West would have easily made 1 NT, especially on the likely ♠ lead from North (winning the first eight tricks with – in order -♠ J, ♠ K, ♠ 10, ♠ A, ♣ K, ♣ Q, ♣ 10 and ♣ A). But North’s 2 ♣ bid - Landy - got his side to the excellent 2 ♥ contract, West leading ♦ Q.
Declarer won ♦ A and led ♠ 5 to ♠ 4, ♠ 7 and East’s ♠ 10. East led ♦ 10 to dummy’s ♦ K, ♠ 2 was trumped with ♥ 3 and ♣ 8 led to East’s ♣ Q. East cashed ♦ 9 and switched (belatedly) to ♥ 2 to ♥ 6, ♥ Q and ♥ A. Declarer trumped dummy’s ♠ 8 with ♥ J, trumped ♣ 2, trumped ♠ 9 with ♥ K, trumped ♣ 5 with ♥ 9 and also scored ♥ 10. Nine tricks.
