Barnstaple Trophies
The Daphne Thorburn Shield
Daphne Thorburn was a very fine player at the Barnstaple Club in the seventies and early eighties. She was in the teams which won the League in 1971, 84 & 85. and won the Championship Pairs in 1973 & 82. She fell and died shortly after one club night in 1985. The Daphne Torburn Trophy has been competed for every year in her memory since her death, the first winners being Don Porter & Barbara Randall, the most recent Carol & Richard. Congratulations to Sam and Theo for their outstanding England Under 21 performance on 15 to 17 February in the Peggy Bayer Camrose competition played in Belfast. The young England team won all their nine matches with an average better than 19-1! Sam & his partner, Liz Gahan, were well ahead in the Butler rankings with Theo and his partner, Andy Cope, in second place ahead of the third England pair. Click here for more details.
Members might be interested in reading Michael Byrne's assessment of the two brothers. 'Theo was on the team last year and is hoping to successfully defend his title. Nicknamed the dark destroyer (because he is incapable of having any sensible auctions involving the club suit) he plays with a quiet and steely reserve, pausing only to look confused when the opponents play cards that he thought were already in his own hand. He hails from a place called Devon, which is where people from London move to when they want to escape the pollution and crime.
Sam can be spotted from several miles away since he wears luminous crocs (the make of shoe not the animal) on his feet. He is easily excited and changes his hair style as often as he changes which suits he is playing on in 3NT, neither with any great success it must be said. Sam is always excellent at working out why he just went down in a cold contract, just time to go down in the next one in fact!'

We are very sorry to have to report that Graham Clark passed away on the night of the 10 July. As you will be aware he had been ill for some time, but continued to play as long as possible, most recently on 20 June. Since then he had been in the North Devon Hospice. Graham had been a member of the club for some 25 years winning many of its trophies, often partnered by Chris Bray. They won the Daphne Thorburn and Multiple Teams this season. Graham was very involved with bridge in North Devon being on the club and section committees until ill health forced his retirement. Our thoughts go to all his family and friends. Funeral service will be held at St Margaret’s Church, Northam on Tuesday 6th August at 1.00pm followed by interment. Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, for the Children’s Holiday Foundation North Devon by retiring collection or c/o Braddicks & Sherborne.
