The quiz with no answer now has an answer!
You hold the following hand, from a recent club event, and hear your partner open 1 :
spade A K 10
heart A 7 3
diamond J 9 5 3 2
club Q J

You will recall that the choices of bid were 1♠ , 1 , 3NT, 4♦, and 2♣ and you were asked to list them in order of preference.

Let's take a look at each:

a) 1♠ is clearly better than 1 . It will let partner know that the Q♠ is likely to be a useful card, whereas the same does not apply in

b) 2♣ is just too much of a distortion. When we later support diamonds, partner will completely mis-read the shape of our hand. Also, If we bid 2♣ and partner bids 2 , we are no further forward, and may as well bid ....

c) 3NT in the first instance. This normally shows 13-15 points and no 4-card major.

d) 4 , although a little old-fashioned, will at least get us to game and give us a chance of bidding a slam if there is one available. However, it uses a lot of bidding space, and takes us past 3NT, which may be the best contract.

Any of the bids could turn out to be best on a given hand, but we should be aiming for the one that gets us to the best contract on the most occasions. So the winning order (in the judge's opinion)  is 1♠ , 3NT, 4 , 2♣ , 1 .

The winner will be announced shortly.

Here's partner's hand, which is a source of some amusement:

spade Q 8 6 5
heart 9
diamond A K Q 8 7
club A K 7

You will see that if your hand is the dealer, the bidding becomes much simpler. 1 -1♠ -1NT-6NT seems normal.
