Selsdon Members playing in Surrey and National Events 2023-24

The new season is well under way and Selsdon Bridge Club members have entered events beyond the Club. We include below a note of Selsdon members sucesses:

Lady Rose Cup - Surrey's most prestigeous teams event:

  • Two teams of Selsdon members have entered - team Irwin: Christine Dyer, Robin Clarke, Tony Cherrett and Steve Irwin and team Adlam: Rosemarie Thompson, David Elvin, Dave Sellman and Brian Adlam. In the first round the two Selsdon teams met, team Irwin prevailing by a narrow margin. Both teams progressed to the second round courtesy of the repêcharge system introduced this year.  In the second round team Irwin won and proceded to the quarter-final; unfortunately team Adlam lost. In the quarter final team Irwin won but lost the semi-final by a whisker to the number one seed, Frances Hinden's team.

Surrey League

  • Two teams of Selsdon members have entered the league again this year.
  • Christine Dyer, Robin Clarke, Tony Cherrett and Steve Irwin retained their position in the first division. They have won two and lost two so far.
  • Brian Adlam, David Elvin, Rosemarie Thompson, Jeremy Heckscher and Dave Sellman retained their position in the second division. They have won two and lost two so far.
  • David Dawson is playing with his Mayfield team in the first division and they have won four and lost one so far.

Metropolitan Cup

  • Christine Dyer and Robin Clarke represented Surrey as part of the winning team in the "B" Division of the Metropolitan Cup. See here for the full results. This qualifies the team to compete in the National Inter-County League Finals which will take place on 16th June 2024. This result continues an impressive series in this event - Surrey have been the winners of the "B" Division of the Metropolitan Cup for four of the last six years and in 2022 they won the National final. The Surrey team in all of these victories has included at least one pair of Selsdon members.

Surrey Dorin Salver

  • Surrey County Bridge Association runs a simultaneous pairs event in aid of a local charity for club sessions played over a one week period usually in December each year. In December 2023 Selsdon's session on 7th December was included in the Dorin Salver event. Rosemarie Thompson and Richard Hazell won at Selsdon with a magnificent 70.45%. When re-scored over all Surrey clubs competing on the Thursday Rosemarie and Richard's score of 68.06% was the best in Surrey for the Thursday session. It was also turned out to be the best score over the whole week so they won the Dorin Salver.

County Pairs and the Corwen Trophy

  • Let's see how many Selsdon pairs will enter this event.

Mary Edwards Cup

  • Christine Dyer and Robin Clarke have qualified to represent Selsdon in the Mary Edwards Cup this year which will be held face-to-face on May 12th at Wimbledon Bridge Club. As current holders of the cup we are all rooting for them to win this cup again this season.

National Pairs

  • We would like to see as many Selsdon pairs as possible competing in this event. You have two attempts to qualify at Selsdon - 8th and 15th February. All you need to do to qualify for the next round is get 55% or more. Even if you don't achieve that at Selsdon you can qualify at another club. Please have a go at the regional final if you do qualify.
