Remembering Georgie

Georgianna Khatib, wife of Dr. Reza Khatib, passed away peacefully at her Palm City home Thursday evening, February 10th.  She was 91.

Born in Indiana on April 4th, 1930, "Georgie" grew up in New York City. She graduated from Bishop McDonald High School on Eastern Parkway, and later received her bachelor's degree from Brooklyn's St. Joseph College in 1958.  She enjoyed a very successful teaching career as a special educator before being promoted to the job of principal for all five of the City's borough schools that served the language and hearing impaired.

Georgie loved travel, and vacationed five times in Europe before meeting Reza.  When they courted, she was quickly embraced by his Iranian family, and she became Reza's loving wife in 1965. Georgie and Reza returned to Iran for joyful family visits many times thereafter.

In the medical world, Georgie quickly became the good doctor's most valued companion and assistant to his practice. She assumed office manager duties and eagerly promoted his associations with other health care professionals in their ongoing fight against brain cancers and Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Khatib's philanthropic achievements soon became well known, and over many happy years Georgie always shared and encouraged Reza's altruistic spirit and personal energy. They made bringing people together a team effort, and launched projects that included comparative studies of religion at two american colleges. Overseas, Iran's Mashad Clinic for the Indigent and that city's first Hospice for the Terminally Ill continue to be important parts of their shared healthcare legacy.

In the Bridge World, Georgie was known to us as a player and as a valued supporter of our Khatib Bridge and Education Center.  She also served for four years as the secretary of the Piper's Landing Bridge Club during Reza's tenure as that club's president.

There's no doubt that to all who knew her well, Georgie will be greatly missed.
